This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

22oz Bottle at our 10-10-10 tasting. Finally the whole reason for this tasting. Pours out a orangish/gold topped with a small head. Aroma was of belg yeast off the top, spice, banana, and citrus. The taste was much as the aroma quite a few things going on here. Overall it was a good time running from 03-10.

Bomber from BevMo. Pours orange-gold with a foamy white head. Aroma is rather vinous with a touch of citrus/spice. Med body. Flavor is just a tad sour, vinous and even oaky. There is no oak, but it’s oaky. Not very sweet at all, except quite lightly. The whole presence is a bit light, and unlike a thick BSA, but it strongly suggests Flanders sour. Quite nice, and wholly unexpected.

22 oz bottle. Pours golden amber with a white head. Very yeasty aroma with cloves and bubble gum, with some grape and green apple notes behind it. Flavor shows the yeast a bit more subdued, with grapes leading the way quite assertively, more like white grape juice than white wine, and the yeasty notes still there but in more of a supporting role along with a spicy hop touch. The grape flavor is fairly sugary, with just a hint of tartness, and the dry yeast flavors serve to balance the sweetness. Yeast becomes more prominent as it warms. Very interesting, and I’m very much enjoying it.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber gold with a white head that dissipated extremely quickly to the edges. Aroma is full of belgian yeast with some candied sugars and a light grape and red wine note. Flavor is quite dry with a red wine note, as well as some light grapes and a bit of sugar came out in the start.

I picked this up at Archer Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed with a good friend on the day after Thanksgiving. Appearance clear golden with thin head, very bubbly like champagne. Aroma of grapes, kinda soapy, very unique. Taste of Belgian yeast and grapes, very interesting, definite beer / wine hybrid that’s done well, but in a way it tastes like a meat, would go extremely well with a nice meal. Definitely a unique taste, I like it.

bottle pours gold with a medium white head. Aroma is lemon all the way, some grass as well. Just smells dry and sour. Flavor is sweet wheat and grassy grains ending with a green grape peel sweetness and a dry yeast. Interesting brew, a bit hot, but good.

bottle - Pours hazy gold with a small, lingering head. It smells of bready malts, spicy, citrusy Belgian yeast and florals. The flavor is sugary sweet with the bready malt joined by spicy yeast, florals, and a hint of hops. Ample alcohol is apparent under all that sweetness. It’s medium bodied and bubbly. The dryness found in some tripels isn’t really apparent here. I don’t know if my palate is just off, but I’m not really tasting the grapes. There’s something fruity there of indeterminate variety. Good brew but I think the sweetness kind of overpowers some of the more subtle flavors. I’ll be curious to see if the complexity comes out more in a couple years.
