This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Bomber pours gold with nice nearly bright white head. The aroma fairly smooth with modest levels of sweet banana, sweet pears, spicy yeast, some lemon like citrus, a bit herbal spiced green tea like and then a bit perfumy. The taste is pretty soft and smooth and offers up banana and pear then moving into yeasty spices, cloves, a faint pepperiness as well as a touch lemon grass and faint acidity. The yeast seems to coat the mouth creating a near creamy pillowy finish. I’m not sure where this is going with age but it is pretty darn nice right now.

Draught. My first thought was, this beer is a mess. Pours golden with thin white head. Moderate lacing. Aroma is wine, like a Cape white, with candi. Some wheaty notes. Medium body with much alcohol power. Many grapy notes, much flavour of the grape. Sweet finish. Didn’t taste chamomile.

On tap at Brouwer's Cafe, pours hazy golden. Aroma of yeast, orange and a little spices. Flavour mirrors this with the spices slightly more pronounced. Very solid.

Bomber from Country Club Liquors. Nose is white grapes, sugary caramel, lightly sweet, and floral hops? Clear yellow with a very small yellow tinged head. Flavor is lightly bitter, with candi sugar coming through with moderate spiciness and some hints of white wine.10/10/13 update: Nose is ginger, chamomile, and some background grape hints. Flavor is cooking spices, lightly sweet candisugar, and a fruity note (with the spices almost pumkinlike) Update 10/17/14 Screwed up and did not take this to the beach on a trip last week so I did not rate it on my Vertical Tasting appropriate 10/10/14, making up for it now. Nose now predominates chamomile, sweet fruity notes, and a hint of bubblegum. Maybe better now than fresh. Probably time to finish the rest of my stock (see if I actually remember to) as I sense a tiny hint of oxidation starting.

22 oz bomber purchased at Green Jug in Canoga Park, California with a BIG assist to Brian at BevMo down the street (he could tell I wanted to try this beer, and called around until he found it for me - good service is not dead, people). Pour is mostly clear straw golden with a 1/2 inch white head that fizzles out pretty quickly. Aroma is sweet yeast clove and floral. Nice soft lemon peel mixes in as well, soft inviting nose. Taste is the nose, though the lemon and Chamomile floral feature in the front, turning to the clove yeast in the back. In the finish is a white wine grapiness which finishes long. Palate is medium bodied, lower carbonation and the finish is mouth coating, lasting and a tad on the oily side. This was really interesting - as it warmed, reminded me more and more of wine. Thanks again for tracking this down, Brian.

Bomber from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear orange-amber color with a medium fizzy white head. Fairly poor head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, grapes, bread and spicy hops. The taste is white grapes, lightly toasted grainy notes, caramel, faint floral notes and bitter peppery hops in the finish. Medium bodied.
