Das Salm Bräu MÄRZEN war 1842 das typische Wiener Bier. Die rötliche Farbe war signifikant für diesen Biertyp, welcher später von den Münchner Brauereien als Oktoberfestbier eingeführt worden ist. Es hat einen deutlich malzigeren Charakter, besticht durch seine Vollmundigkeit und ist wenig gehopft. Insbesonders Frauen, welche den ausgeprägten Hopfengeschmack nicht so sehr mögen, finden den Einstieg in den Biergenuß über das Märzen. Noch heute ist dieses Bier sogar in den USA als Vienna-Red bekannt. Die Stammwürze beträgt 12,5° Grad, der Alkoholgehalt 5,0%. Gebraut wird es im Zweimaischverfahren, 7 Tage Gärzeit und 21 Tage Lagerzeit machen dieses Bier besonders zu Fleischspeisen zum perfekten Begleiter.

On tap. Amber colour. Aroma is rather faint, with malt. Light bitterness. Overcarbonated so it's hard to feel the taste. Boring.

Sampled from tap at the brewpub. Almost clear, amber with an off-white head. Sweetish-malty aroma of toasted nuts, some caramel and a touch of grains. Moderately sweet, malty, slightly bitter and a bit grassy taste of caramel, toasted nuts and some straw, followed by a short, moderately bitter, slightly grassy-spicy finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Solid.

On tap at Salm Brau, pours a hazy amber orange with a small beige head. Aroma brings out toasted malt and a hint of caramel. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted malt and a bit of sweet caramel. Just enough sweetness in there. Nicely balanced, drinkable, but uninteresting.

Neben dem vielen österreichischen Märzen, die eigentlich ein Helles sind, ist dies wirklich ein Märzenbier: dunkelgelb, fast orange und weniger hopfig als malzig. Die Aromenpalette ist ganz gut komponiert, aber irgendwie fehlt der. Wumms dahinter. Hier könnte man ruhig vollmundiger brauen, aber vermutlich will man lieber ein braves Touristenbier.

Deep amber, hazy body, with a medium, creamy, lacing, yellowish head.
Aroma of biscuit, grains, bread, grass, some flowers, honey.
Tastes quite similar, with some caramel and slight toast.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes medium bitter, moderate sweet, a bit toasty, bready, floral, a bit grassy.
Really nice. Quaffable and full bodied, with enough toastiness and hops to balance the broad, sweet body. Not an outstanding style example, but pretty above average for Austrian means.

On tap at salm brau gaststatte. Bright amber color, hazed big creamy offwhite head. Rich malty aroma, biscuits, bread, starch with grassy hops. Taste balanced mild bitterness, light dusty texture, low carbonation, fairly dry finish. Nice.
