Old rating from Dec 2014 - From the cask, pours black with a off white head. Aromas & tastes of chocolate, nuts, liquorice & roasted malt. Moderate body. Dry lightly bitter finish

Cask at the Southampton Arms, London on 21st May 2024. Deep sepia with pale tan foam and scant lacing. Rich roasty malts and savoury grassy herbiness in aroma. Smoky roastiness in-mouth and a rich finish of coffee, nuttiness and woodsmoke. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Superb.

Appearance: Opaque deep brown with a nice beige head. Aroma: Toasted & roasted malts, burnt bread, berry esters, distant coffee & chocolate, floral hop. Taste: Rather dry, balanced. Otherwise as described above. Pleasant ending hop bitterness. Mouth feel: Light plus body, average carbonation. Summary: A solid stout.

Bottled. Black colour, small white head. Aroma is chocolate, roast, some floral and mild earthy tones. Flavour is berries, some chocolate and mild wooden tones as well as some coffee. Nicely balanced, with coffee.

Very dark brown with quick fading wispy head. Aroma and flavour are malty. Bittersweet. Slightly burnt. Some aniseed too. Flavoursome and sessionable.

Cask at the Waggon & Horses, Stourbridge. Pours cola brown with a small head. Aroma is roast and cola. Taste has cola, roast and chocolate.

Bottle from beer hawk. Black colour roasted bitter and chocolate. Thin body. Light bitter taste.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Appearance - deep brown to black. Light brown chinks. Attractive but thin fawn head. Nose - milk chocolate and caramel. Taste - more caramel and milk chocolate. Light smoke at the back. Palate - creamy texture and close to medium bodied. Decent bitterness. Overall - a generous stout, perhaps even a porter.

Lively stout with a bubbly off-white head. Toasty malt aroma. Flavour has a little of that too, with some dark chocolate and a touch of tart fruit with a nice, toasty finish too.
