Barreleye is a classic barley wine characterised by a rich malty sweetness and an expressive hoppiness. We barrel-aged this second version for about six months in a second use Ledaig barrel, to give it character from the wood and some lingering hints of peated whiskey.

Pours a dark reddish brown colour and a light beige head with a small layer retention. Aroma's: upon opening the bottle shortly sour. From the glass: peaty, iodine, light brett, dark fruit. Retronasal there's fruity sourness, peat, malty sweetness, some funkiness. Flavour is light sour, light moderate sweet, peaty. Above medium bodied. Long finish, with peat/ash, slightly dry, moderate bitter. Weird and seems somewhat infected, but eventually not too bad.

Bright clear amber beer, small pale tan head. Light smooth palate, mildly dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Fluffy light malts, a little creamy sweetness. The backbone of this one is fairly bright dried fruits, a little spice and peated whiskey. The beer description says something about hints of peated whiskey. Yeah right, about as subtle as my wife when I've left the toilet seat up. Still, it's not peaty to the point of chewing band aids. The bright dried fruits elevate this one and make sure the peat is s feature and never the main attraction. Light spicy finish. Quite drinkable for a peat BA job.

Bottle. Dark amber color. Peat, oak, dried fruit in the aroma. Malty sweetish flavor with peat, dried fruit, And bretty notes. Upcoming sourness. Whisky. Odd mix of flavor they don’t fit, but it somehow works out fine for this beer.

Bottle. Amber pour. Aroma of rich savory smoke, peat, raisin, caramelised malt, dates, oak and figs. Taste of meaty smoke, peat, iodine, raisin, sticky caramelised malt, figs, oak, dates and some grape. Delicious, has a great balance between peat smoke and ripe fruit. Very good.

Bottle, directly from brewery during Corona brewery sales. Color: Slightly hazy murky reddish brown, very thin beige head. Aroma: Peaty, Ledaig with subtle notes of red and dark fruit. Taste: Peaty and bit boozy Ledaig is overwhelming the base beer. Subtle notes of sweetish dark and red fruit. Long lasting peaty finish, going to a more fruity finish. I like this beer although the Barleywine is pushed to the background. I like the peaty part of it without the roasted malts you usually get while most Ledaig BA beers are Imperial Stouts, I think. Not that balanced and less complex than the first version (Auchentoshan BA) of Barreleye. Nevertheless a nice one.

Te veel zin om deze te drinken. Beetje laten rijpen was natuurlijk beter.
