We’ve developed many IPA recipes in our R&D program, but right from the tank, our Manta Ray Double IPA was a winner. Aromas of fresh, citrusy tangerine, melon and light pine leap from the beer and linger over a smooth finish. Like its namesake, this brew can sneak up on you – a big beer without a bite.

A: Straw yellow with an inch of foam. Good lacing.
S: Pine, pitted fruit (not dark), caramel when I whiff real hard.
T: Light pitted fruit, pine, some sweet notes, not really bitter or sweet.
M: Not full bodied but close
O: A decent Double IPA but not engaging to my palate.

Bottle. Pours clear golden with a medium head. Aroma is strongly tropical, mango and oranges, with a hint of citrus and butter. Body is rather heavy and sweet, yet not overpowered. Others would still call this a regular IPA. Smooth, great balance. Lingering sweet finish. Good.

Another nice Ballast Point DIPA, big on citrus, pine, and cat pee, sweet and soapy with an alternating stream of caramel malt and pinecone assertiveness flowing across your palate. Finishes with a bittersweet grapefruit hop blast, leading into a long, long IBU-packed fade. Tasty.

Draft sampled at Dominion Wine & Beer, thanks Tyler! Clear golden yellow with off-white head. Aromas of citrus, floral notes. Tastes of citrus, tropical fruit, floral notes. Medium body with a dry finish. Very nice.

12 oz. bottle. Crystal clear golden color, lasting thin bubblely head with mild sticky lacing. Aroma is mild tropical fruit, mild florals, weak pine. Flavor is a damn near carbon copy of the aroma. The alcohol is masked pretty well. Maybe just a touch noticed. Body is medium with a oily texture. Overall pretty average, no problems.

On tap at Ballast Point Little Italy. Clear golden with a white head. Fresh and hoppy with citrus, some pineapple and light biscuits. The body was medium and the finish quite bitter.

Pours a clear, golden-yellow, with middling head. Aroma has some tropical fruit and some citrus and just a touch of sour old towel. Flavor is marked by citrus and tropical fruit and a ton of hop bite, plus a bit of alcohol burn. This is actually a pretty decent beer.
