Bourbon barrel aged edition of Mikkeller’s flavoured Beer Geek Fudgesicle stout, 37.5 cl ‘geuze’ bottle shared by Steve, cheers mate! Tiny-bubbled, pale mocha-beige, thin and open head, ink black robe with thin and hazy burgundy edges. Aroma of molasses, hot chocolate sauce, caramel liqueur, bourbon indeed, cappuccino, vanilla-scenting oak and old vanilla beans, soy sauce, cocoa, muscovado sugar. Sweet onset, dense, candied plum with a porcini-like umami edge, even a touch of beef stock, medium carbonated with very full, oily, rather sticky mouthfeel; deep toffeeish, molasses- and caramel-like maltiness with chocolate edge, shifting from sweet to bitter, with clear vanilla-like oak wood and sweet bourbon booziness colouring the end. Soft hop bitter note too, but the thick maltiness, added cocoa, bourbon and wood prevail, with even a madera-like quality in the very end. Indulgent and decadent as expected, but not as sweet as feared and actually quite refined in relation to the concept behind it. Would love to revisit – or to try the rye barrel aged version.
