Robust Porter

The Vortex Porter: dark roasted malts, balanced sweetness, chocolate and coffee notes. That was a short description. There is nothing short-lived about stopping into a brewery for a beer; it’s a vortex where minutes become hours and empty glasses build up into towers.

A reddish brown porter with a thin lacing mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel and chocolate, light coffee, OK. In mouth, a nice sweet chocolate malt with light caramel and coffee, light mineral notes. Ok. On tap at brewery.

Dark muddy copper body with vague beige head, soft light roasted coffee on the nose with faint dark bread hints. Flavour is some sharp coffee but lighter, sort of caramel in a faint way. Too watery on the mouth though. Serviceable but simple.

Draught @ Red Racer, named "Robust Porter" but with the same specs. Dark brown, no head, but has that nice burnished bronze at the edges so really a nice colour. Chocolate nose, on the underhopped side, as per the Riot style. Chocolate, cocoa powder palate...this really falls in the middle. When you look at some of the old school classic porters, this lacks the malt complexity of a Sam Smiths, but also lacks the richness of Smutty Robust. If you're going old school, i want one or the other; falling in between just sort of gives you nothing to latch on to.
