"A smooth, creamy ale." Introduced in 1994 as a 4.8% Irish Ale by Bass at Caffrey’s Ulster brewery, and promoted strongly with an advertising campaign of "strong words softly spoken". Interbrew took over in 2000, soften the recipe and attempted to catch the lager market, using a new promotion of "a storm brewing". Coors acquired the brand in 2002. Initially contract brewed by Interbrew for Coors at Ulster, the brand eventually moved to Coor’s Tower Brewery in Tadcaster.

On tap, I was under the impression that this was a cream ale, which I still believe is the correct style category, but anyways...Thick draft Guinness-like head, thin aroma of banana, grass, hay, some vanilla. Taste is equally thin and lager-esque. Nothing interesting or exciting, I actually had this one to better my knowledge of cream ales, so slightly confused and disappointed to see it labeled as a bitter.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein bernsteinfarbenes Bier mit geringer Schaumkrone. Geruch malzig, Karamell, fruchtig. Geschmack trocken fruchtig, malzig, Karamell.

On tap at O’Neills, Soho, London. Hazy honey color, just after pouring looks great with nice creamy head. Thin bodied. Bland taste. Disliked it.

Fin gyllenfarge. Ellers ingenting positivt å si omdenne. Smaker vann med metallsmak. Så å si ingen kullsyre. Altså helt død. Kommer aldri til å smake denne mer....

Keg sf mcilroys watford. Blimey it has Ben a while since I’ve had this beer. Clear copper colour. Persistent off white head. Oh this is bad. Aroma is wet socks. Stale malt. Watery thin palate. Absolute horrid.

450ml Aluminium Bottle (it’s a posh can with a cap) of Caffrey’s Premium Irish Ale, 3.8%ABV; BBD 28 Feb 2013, poured at home into a ’Good Poeple’ badged US pint glass on 2 Apr 2013, so a bit out of date. Bright amber body with a head that left before it arrived. Mildly malty in the nose, but not much of anything really. Malty feel to the flavour, semi-sweet caramel and Bourbon biscuits without the middle (the creamy bit). Watery, but not unpleasant, just a little too understated and overall weak in body depth and flavour strength. Not something I’d have again: I do however remember when it first hit the bars in the UK, very popular with my mates, I even enjoyed a few pints. It has changed for the worst and it wasn’t too great to start with!
