Old Ale is a firm favourite during the autumn and winter months. A dark, warming brew. Burnt sugars and roasted malts compliment the premium Maris Otter barley, supplanting the light bitterness of aroma hops. With hints of dried fruit and dates, this rich ale has been likened to the oak: steadfast throughout the year, regardless of the season.

Cask-conditioned at the Royal Oak, London SE1 16/10/08. Dark brown with reddish undertones and a slight, off white head. Aroma of red fruit, caramel, nuts and milk chocolate. Easy drinking, with a sweetish flavour, repeating many of the notes found in the aroma, with some grassy hops and a short, dry finish. Good stuff.

Cask gravity at Oxford Beer Festival 16-10-08 Pours brownish colour, it’s difficult to be more exact in the light of the Town Hall. Good maltiness and some sweet slightly tangy fruitiness. Reminds me of old furniture in many ways, its a bit creaky, bit dusty but well made and comfortable once you’ve settled into it. I really rather liked this and was glad that Neil Hoggarth Oxford CAMRA recommended me a beer like this that I might ordinarily have overlooked.

275ml bottle. Beige head over a dark ruby coloured body. Black malty aroma followed by a sweet malty, almost candy sweet taste sustained by liquorice and slightly offset by the addition of spicy tartness. Weak and thin palate (Thanks to Wivi-Ann, 17.03.2008)

Cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. A dark amber beer with a red shine under a small tan head. The aroma is sweet malty with light notes of fruity, malt, and hops. The flavor is sweet malty with primary notes of straw, but also hints of fruit.

From cask: a brown beer wiht a fine head. The aroma is very faint but malty. The flavor is malty, smokey, and caramelic with a great balance between the sweetness and the bitterness. It has a great smokey dty finish that lingers (almost citrus notes). A really good beer.

From cask at Charlies. Pours deep amber with a little lacing head. Slight herbal aroma. Flavour holds a rather dry bitterness and a quite dry malt flavour. Slight fruity note. Ends bitter and dry. Decent, but clearly somewhat off and not fresh.4-3-4-2-9=2.2

From cask at Charlies. Pours dark brown with a golden orange/redish glare and a small bubbly andoff-white head. Mild roasted malt aroma with a light hint of liqourice. Flavour has a more pronounced liqourice and chocolate malt presence. Smooth and easy with a mild bitterness in the finish.6-3-7-3-14=3.3

Cask. I’m sorry for being a bl**dy Continental, but is "Old Ale" allowed at 4.3%? That’s a boy’s ale in Belgium... B.C."H."; beer is dark ruby to the point of being black. Fresh hops nose, bit of rosewater taking over. Soft sweet taste with a bit of dark, but not (overly) roasted malts. Generally sweetish-malty, with some backthroat complexity. Medium bodied, grist slickness, suave . Nice beer, overreaching its 4.3%, but then again, "old ale"?

(Cask at Royal Oak, Borough, London, 23 Nov) Dark brown colour with ruby notes, small head. Malty, nutty nose with caramel and notes of earthy hops in the finish. Malty, nutty taste with chocolate and caramel. Slightly sweet, but with notes of earthy hops in the finish. Nice, but more subtle than Harveys ales tend to be. (6/3/7/3/13=3.2) Rerate: (Cask at Royal Oak, Borough, London, 18 Nov 2023) Dark brown colour, almost black, with foamy beige head. Malty, roasted nose with chocolate, coffee, caramel and oak wood.
