A strong and bold authentic Scotch Ale , Old Jock is named after the soldiers of the Highland and Lowland Regiments of Scotland who are referred to as "Jocks” . These men, who often fought in terrible conditions against great odds, were renowned for their determination and valour. Old Jock Ale reflects the strength and character of these men who would have enjoyed such a strong ale.
This dark red ale has a full bodied flavour of malt on an excellent background of hop bitterness. A drink to savour at 6.7%.

500ml bottle bought at Vinmonopolet Langnes. Good looking in the glass white its deep copper coloured body, steady off-white head, and spotty lacing. Inviting dark caramel aromas, mid-sweet. Caramel malt driven taste added by hints of bread and dark fruits. Lightly roasted malty finish, semi sweet. Fine bodied. Pretty nice on a Saturday eve. (Tromsø, 17.01.2026).

Bottle at home from the little shop in the next village and a very strange find. Had it as part of my homemade advent calendar. Good pour and a sweet malt aroma. And the taste was just all sweet malts. Too sweet for me and it was a drain pour. Not worth the units.

Poured from 500mL bottle. Dark copper brown with light beige head. Caramel malt, mild biscuit malt, quite simple and malty. Okay.

Scotch or wee heavy bought at a supermarket in Aberdeen, shared with Goedele. Thin and open, tiny-bubbled, pale greyish beige head over a clear, deep mahogany brown robe with ruddy highlights and lots of lively sparkling. Aroma of wet toast, dry caramel, old walnut shells, diluted chicory, butterscotch, medlar, pear skin, tea, 'Haagse hopjes', dried bayleaf. Sweetish, rounded onset, subtle notes of medlar, pear and blueberry with a vague red plum-ish sourish edge, medium carbonation, slick but quite full body. Smooth butterscotch- and caramel-like maltiness with brown-bready accents, slowly developing a mild toasty bitter side somewhat reminiscent of chicory, but remaining altogether rather subtle for the style; light herbal, tea-ish hops in the end, becoming a bit more spicy eventually. Classically styled, balanced, clean and easygoing example of a perhaps somewhat underrated style. Certainly enjoyed this one - in the setting of an old-fashioned Scottish hotel, which may have added to the experience...

Bottle from a small grocery in Edinburgh. Red, low to medium carbonation. Sweet malt and sugar, caramel, full palate but not overly sweet or heavy. Light hop character.
