Here’s a mahogany-coloured, traditional dark beer. Complex aromas of liquorice, prunes and hop resin combine with deep, rich flavours of coffee and chocolate; it’s a fan favourite! Winner of a SIBA bronze medal.

500ml bottle at home on 1st April 2016. Poured into an Abbot Ale pint glass tankard. Very dark body, slight ruby hue to the black colour, on top a tanned foaming crown. Malts rule the brew, some chocolate and coffee esters in the aroma, hints of liquorice within the choc/coffee flavouring. Fairly smooth and soft mouthfeel, a gentle but tasty Stout from start to finish.

Bottle. Very very dark, although not fully black. No head. Has a good nose, certainly with the advertised liquorice with is abundant in both aroma and taste and a full sweetness.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 6/4/2013. Almost black with a thin tan head. Big black currant notes, a hint of chocolate and liquorice, before a dryish finish. Ok.

Cask @ Harlequin, Sheffield 031112
Very dark caramel brown, off white bubbly head, touch of lacing
Aroma of vague caramel malts, almost nothing on the nose
Taste of dark caramel malts, bit of roasted malts, not much roast, touch of dark fruits, watery
Palate - soft carb, thin body. Finish has a little dark fruity malt
Overall - This just didn’t come across as a stout more a dullish porter
