Bottle 33 cl. Pours a clear, dark brown with an orange hue and a creamy and lacing, beige head. Faint roast and caramel in the nose, but also the same hint of tartness as in the Blond. Medium body, slightly roasty and faintly tart. Totally lacking the complexity of a good Dubbel, this is almost closer to a Stout. 180322

15/VII/20 - 33cl bottle from a trade, shared @ home, BB: 30/IX/20 (2020-636)

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy dark beige to brown head, stable, non adhesive. Aroma: nice, lots of dark chocolate, cocoa powder, alcohol, vanilla notes, some dried fruits, caramel, boozy, bourbon almost. MF: medium to full body. Taste: sweet, caramel malts up front, but not too sugary, good gentle roast, lots and lots of chocolate, soft acidity. Aftertaste: caramel, dried fruits, some toffee, hint of ripe banana, good roast, soft bitterness, alcohol warmth playing in the throat, very enjoyable Belgian Strong Ale with some porter allures.

The dubbel in this series of Hesbania beers from Genoelselderen in the Haspengouw region, brewed at Amburon (this 'bierfirma' apparently brews at different locations). Thick and frothy, intricately Bruges lace-like lacing, yellowish beige, bit irregular but very stable head on an initially clear, warm mahogany brown beer with copper red hue, turning misty with sediment. Aroma of hard caramel, chocolate cookies, freshly baked brown bread, very clear added iron (as confirmed by the 'hand test'), coriander seed, old cinnamon powder, nutmeg, dried fig, vague hints of old coffee filters, homemade cola, ginger powder, dry tea bags. Sweetish onset, clear candi sugar, fruity esters but rather 'cleanly' so, just a hint of dried banana along with some dried fig and prune, fizzily carbonated but not too harshly so. Rounded, lean body, caramelly maltiness with a cereally edge and a brown-bready toasty bitterish tail, some residual sweetness but not too much, with that iron effect manifesting itself as a metallic 'zing' - though perhaps a tad less obnoxiously so than expected based on its strong orthonasal presence. Bittering finish, the toasty aspect of the malts coming more to the foreground and merging with a herbal and leafy hop bitterness, while a dim coriander-like spiciness and some very subtle phenols linger around. The alcohol, noticeable as a warming 'afterglow', remains more or less in place, but a 'jenever'-ish wryness still appears in the very end. Well-balanced in the sense that this dubbel (or 'massieve ale' as the old OBP would say) is not overly sweet and ends with more bitterness than expected, but the iron in the nose is anything but flattering and the alcohol could have been better hidden at this ABV. Sweet, too, but luckily not too cloyingly so, as is the case in its macro-brewed Leffe, Grimbergen, Affligem or Tongerlo counterparts. Still very classic for the style, though, clearly aimed at the larger beer drinking audience. Redundant.

Bottle from Daniëls Drinkmarket, Tongeren. Dark brown colour, creamy white foam. Nose of caramel, light roasted malts. Taste is watery, light notes of dried plums and roasted malts. Very weak and thin, not very nice.

Bottle from Bierboom, Bruges. Shared with Anke.
Gusher! Pours hazy dark brown with a big, lasting, frothy, tan head; some lacing. The aroma contains roasted malt, toasted bread, raisin & figs, walnut, fondant, burnt caramel. It tastes light malty sweet, bit nutty & bready and light to medium roasted bitter, some sour dark fruits in the back. Dry, toasty, slightly metallic finish. Medium to full body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. Has an artisan feel to it, quite good.
