Bottle @ the Butcher, after attending Blaine L Reininger’s gig. Dark brown color. Dense, rocky beige head. Aroma’s: fruit (red & dried), some phenol or paint thinner which is off putting a bit. Also roast and sweetness retronasal. Flavor is moderate sweet, roasted, fruits. Medium bodied. Long finish, roasted, moderate bitter. A bit weird in the aroma, but for the rest nice.

(Draught at Butcher’s Tears, Amsterdam, 27 Feb 2015) Dark red colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, dried fruit and red berries. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, dried fruit, toffee, red fruit and a balanced earthy bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and warming, with a slight acidity (probably from the smoked malt). Quite nice.

Deep ruby brown colour, small frothy beige head, recedes after a while, good lacing. Aroma sweet malty, toasted, caramel, burnt sugar, dark fruit. Taste medium bitter and sweet, medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, roasted dry bitter aftertaste, bit woody, herbal notes. Taste doesn’t deliver what the aroma promises, alas.

Dark copper brown with medium sized thick off white head. Cocoa, lots of aromatic hops, smoked tofu, ash, caramel, marmalade. Light sweet with smoke coming through and hoppy bitter finish. Medium bodied. Nice balanced ale, smoke is not overpowering and works well with the other aromas.

Dark brown and clear with lasting head. The aroma has elements of strawberry jam. The initial taste is also sweet. In the middle the moderately smokey malts come through before further fruity malt sweetness finish. There’s a dry, lasting bitterness in the aftertaste.

Bottle from ABC Beers, Den Haag. Poured a murky dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is floral yeast. The flavour is moderate bitter with a yeasty, barnyard, light floral hop palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

33cl bottle from ABCBeers shared with JMGreenUK. Thick creamy off white head. Very hazy amber pour. Honey in the aftertaste. Don’t get the smoke. Still a nice beer.

On tap at BT. Amber-brown colour, beige head. Aroma of dark malts, toffee, dark fruits, some chocolate. Flavour follows the aroma, a little bitterness, amber malts, bitter finish. Light to medium-bodied. Liked last years edition better.

Tap @ Butchers Tears during ’oudjaarsticken 2014’, small sample. Almost clean copper color, short head. Aroma of malt, toffee, caramel, slight roast, bit fruity. Bit sweet in taste, slight bitter. Bit boring.
