At MEUG, served by the brewer, Kees Bubberman, himself – at that time the latest of his barrel projects, a strong stout aged on bourbon barrels with coconut and kalamansi, the latter being a kumquat-related citrus fruit from the Philippines. Shared by my girlfriend, who was absolutely smitten with this one. Thickly membrane-like lacing, creamy, medium sized, yellowish beige head over a jet black beer. Aroma of warm caramel sauce, melting milk chocolate, brown rum, coconut indeed but well-embedded into a very complex whole, Cointreau (or indeed mandarin peel – the kalamansi peeping through, obviously), honey liqueur, lots of vanilla-like oak wood and bourbon sweetness, sherry, strawberry jam, baked blueberries – this beer keeps breathing wonderful aromas, truly stunning. Starts with a lot of candied sweetness, fig compote, blueberry crumble and raisins, softly carbonated with a subtle teriyaki-like umami accent adding complexity without overpowering, full and thickly oily mouthfeel, caramelly and chocolatey malt body, sweet with the sweetness enhanced by the coconut flavour – but still with a balancing toasted bitter edge at the back. The sweetness does remain, but woody tannins from the bourbon barrel as well as the peel of the kalamansi add further dryness and balance; vanilla-, coconut-, sherry- and rum or Cointreau cocktail-like aspect slinger, boozy and warming but nowhere wry or otherwise bothersome. The present-day sweet side of imperial stout at its best – in fact closer to a dark barleywine, but in any case boasting huge complexity and refinement of flavours. Not just the best of Kees’ Barrel Projects I had so far, but one of his best brews for me ‘tout court’.

Thanks! Sampled draft @ MEUG 2018. Black, tanned head. Nose is tobacco, roast, boozy, prunes, almost citrus acidity, bit too hot, boozy. Taste is figs, prunes, lows of fruit, fruit liquor, bit too hot, low varnish alcohol but nice fruit syrup, fruity tobacco, low roast. Hard to tell what is happening here, quite a unique flavour, I would have never guessed coconut & citrus fruit.
