What started as a Beer Exploration Journal exclusive in our Milton Tasting Room, quickly stole the show and rose to the top as a guest favorite. Which could only mean one thing … we had to bottle up that goodness and take it on the road for all to enjoy!
Taking inspiration from the traditional Indian beverage ‘Golden Milk,’ this Imperial Cream Ale is brewed with an oat cream base using a blend of equitably sourced, single-origin spices from our pales at Burlap and Barrel in NYC. That spice blend includes a complex mingling of vanilla beans, ginger, turmeric, star anise, cardamom and cinnamon.
The result? An 8% ABV creamy concoction that’s chock full of sweet and spice, and everything nice.

Deep and very clear copper and bronze coloured body with a slight off-white head on top, about two centimetres tall at first that fades to just a thin layer after a few seconds. Aroma of rich creamy, vanilla-y and crisp malts show at first in the nose with some alcohol, light sugars and a deep malt scent with a light astringent and bitter note towards the end. Medium-bodied; Very rich malt and vanilla, creamy notes dominate up front with a lot of pungency and alcohol notes with bunches of residual sugars here along with some subdued apples, pears and pure caster sugar notes. Aftertaste shows some pungency in terms of alcohol and sugars with a bunch of malts here, but much more of the creamy, vanilla-y finish from the sugars here with a lot of body in the finish and some slight bitterness at the end. Overall, a very strong and pungency, with some softer sugars at the finish, but the body remains deep and robust and a little fruity note shows near the end. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria (Fairfax County), Virginia on 24-October-2020 for US$3,79, brought into the store on 29-September-2020 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 21-July-202.

12 ounce bottle from Woodman's Onalaska, 7/14/21. Very hazy orange. Somewhere between floaties and haze. Whatever that is. Thin fizzy white head. Fair retention. Aroma of ginger, cinnamon, spice, vanilla. Taste is vanilla, toast, spice, citrus, cinnamon.

12oz bottle. Quite an oddball beer, even by 2021, or 2020 when it was brewed, standards. Cream Ale base is there. Turmeric comes in huge, probably the biggest I've ever encounted in a beer...if I've even had it in a beer before. Other spices balance it out, vanilla and oats smooth it over. Kind of a great beer, true to DFH wild style.

What in the hell...so much going on in this pint, so much of it not good. Underlying stevia-ish sweetness taints everything above; like a black & tan made with diet cream soda and sarsaparilla. Imperial cream ale would have to run sugary on its own, but tossing in abundant amounts of the adjuncts makes for a nigh undrinkable spice bomb. Yep, you taste clearly defined pockets of turmeric, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and anise. If that's your bag, go right ahead. It ain't mine.
Pours amber with a thick white head. Immediate aroma of ginger, spices, cloves. Taste has anise, vanilla, cinnamon. Palate has some nice cream ale elements that are well balanced by all the spices. Good.
