L’ile Noire is a Grand Saison beer traditionally brewed in the winter and stored for use in the summer, with plenty of fruit and spice. Our French inspired, Black Isle version is light, refreshing and uses organic Citra hops to give it tropical aromas. Pale in colour, it has a spicy, full malt flavour.

Keg at Black Isle Bar, Inverness. It pours clearish gold with a medium white head. The aroma is icing sugar, biscuit, doughy bread, icing sugar, rich tea biscuit, nougat and cereal. The taste is bitter, sweet bready, rich tea biscuit, bit of mint, almond biscotti, peppery spice, shandy, icing sugary, estery fruits with a drying finish.Medium body and moderate, prickly carbonation. Odd mix of flavours, but it's alright.

Scottish strong saison from this organic craft brewery in the Highlands, bottle from Geers in Ghent. Moussy, eggshell-white, somewhat membrane-lacing, slowly opening but largely stable head over lightly hazy, apricot blonde beer with warm golden hue. Aroma of spice bread, bergamot tea, kaffir lime, stewed pear, sugared rosehip tea, banana peel, orange zest, dough. Fruity onset, apple and banana peel but only restrainedly estery for a saison, vague sourish pineapple accent, medium carb, cereally and lightly bready malt body leading to a floral finish with a lot of additional, ethereal spiciness (bergamot and lavender almost), with a softly grassy, very mildly spicy hop bitterness to it. Malt sweetishness lingers. Floral, fruity but above all very notably spicy Belgian style saison with ‘spicy’ in the aromatic, ethereal, tea-ish sense of the word – a bit weirdly so, feeling less ‘grande’ than I was hoping for, but technically correct. Still, something along the lines of Dupont’s Bons Voeux or Blaugies’ La Moneuse would have been more satisfying for me…
