It's not too often the brewing process requires us to make beer in a mind over matter sort of way. Hot Rocks Lager presented us an opportunity to work with Tony Cornet of Bend Brewing Co. on a collaborative project. Working with our brewers to bring her recipe to fruition, she decided to "rock it" old school.
A robust, dark lager brewed with glowing-hot granite creating a “Super-Boil” that caramelizes the wort, resulting in giving Hot Rocks its caramel and toffee notes. Hot Rocks is one of Port Brewing’s early spring releases.

22oz bottle I picked up while in Illinois. Knowing nothing about this beer other than the name of it when I picked it up, it poured a much darker color than I expected. Dark brown color with a medium sized dark tan head. Aroma was medium roasted malts, touch of dark bitter sweet notes. Interesting brew!

Aroma: The aroma has some light coffee, roast, spice, bread, fruit, and some light hops
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a fizzy light brown head and some light lace
Flavor: Starts off light-medium sweet with some roastiness, and it closes with a light-medium bitterness
Palate: This one is medium-full bodied, with average- to-lively carbonation, and a lightly dry finish
Overall Impression: This one wasn’t really all that impressive, but it was still pretty good. I had the nose slightly over the taste, but nothing really stood out about this one for me.

Bottle, 22oz, at Nærbø Ølfestival. It pours a dark brown body under a small, dense, beige head. Roasted aroma with some coffee and chocolate, and a solid dose of caramel. Roasted malts, chocolate, hints of coffee, and a decent bitterness, stretching out into the far end. Smooth, full-bodied and pleasantly carbonated. Certainly a nice lager beer. 111022

Draught at Lost Abbey. Nice cocoa nose, some raisins and nut. Dark brown with orange. Nice roasty , nutty flavor, cocoa. A bit thin, but a good dunkel.

On tap at Small Bar division. Pours a very dark amber with an off white head that dissipates completely. Aroma has notes of dark grains with hints of dark fruits and backing earthiness. Flavor has a bit of dark fruit with dark grains and a hint of sweetness.

Very hazy dark brown beer with a short lived biscuit coloured head. Slightly soft palate. Light touch of dark malt. Subtle smoke, well buried. Semi dry bitter hops providing bitter fruit. Finishes with a spritzy carbonated bite. Not really a lager and doesn’t work for me.

On tap at Gourmet Haus. Malt, wheat field and cola. Brown with red highlights an khaki head that lingers wistfully over the top. Chewy biscuit belies the lager nature. Crisp ending, although the malt is glued all over the mouth.

Clear purple brown beer, small beige head, dissipates immediately. Aroma: dried prunes, rotten bananas, some red fruit, touch of caramel, something "off". MF: lots of carbon, light body. Taste: ripe fruits, some raisins, rotten fruits, touch of mocha. Aftertaste: bitter, coffee grit, off taste.
Note: Has the bottle gone bad? Maybe if they would start putting effin' dates on their bottles in the States we would be able to tell.

Sampled @ Nærbø beerfestival. Dark amber body with a thin beige head. Aroma is strong malty, caramel and mild smoked. Flavor is sweet malt, caramel, toast, nuts and some roast in the background. Fine body and long aftertaste, some complexity. As a Dunkel this really rocks.
