If you are a fan of our big, boozier-malt offerings than this one is for you. Rich notes of treacle, caramel, and apparent alcohol with a relatively light body, semi-sweet finish. More English than American, it drinks great now, but could be aged for later.

From tap at BeerTemple, Amsterdam. Malty aroma with caramel, toffee, dried fruits, hint of cocoa. Medium sweet and mild bitter. Body is medium. Malty and fruity, some fruits in the aftertaste, a very fine Barley Wine.

American barleywine by Adroit Theory, a Virginian craft brewery one sees popping up in Europe quite often since a few years. At Billie’s Craft Beer Fest. Pale yellowish-beige, opening and dissipating ‘ring’ of mousse on a lightly misty, warm orange-glowing amber coloured beer. Aroma of warm caramel sauce, peanut butter, honey, cooked dessert apples, white bread pulp, pear, young ‘jenever’, brandy. Sweet onset, clean, hints of pear and candied fig, softish carb; caramelly and lightly peanutty malts, very light toasty accent but remaining rather sweet, ending with a soft floral hoppiness and warming, brandy-like alcohol, while a honeyish and almost bubblegummy sweetness lingers. Adroit Theory beers are consistently too sweet for me and this one is no exception; on top of that it lacks depth and maturity for the intended style, feeling a tad ‘empty’ even, and as a result reminding me more of a sugary Belgian tripel than a true American barley wine. This brewery will never truly conquer my heart, I’m afraid.

Small rim over orangey amber beer. Sweet-ish, caramel, darek green herbs. Sweet flavour, partly burnt caramel, bitterish from the burn, rather thin for the ABV. Bit of toffee, but not buttery. Sticky, alcoholthinning, not quite chewy, but viscous. Sweet in the start, but then alcohol/fusels taking over.

In style it lacks a lot of complexity that ought to be there. This one is specifically oxidized a little. But it misses the spot on some basic barleywine characteristics. Beer temple ams

473ml can @ tasting 24.4.2021. Canned on 24.09.20. Poured amber in color with a thick white head. Ripe fruits, caramel, sweetness, almonds in aroma and flavor. Full bodied. Almost Quadrupel like more than barley wine.

(Can, 0.473 l - canned on 24.09.2020, thanks VastActiv, 20210424) The beer poured amber and cloudy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, caramel, molasses and earth. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, caramel, earth, molasses, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A delicious malty brew.

44 cl can (12%) @ Kultainen Apina, canned 09/2020 Aroma is odd with overripe fruits, menthol and caramel malt. Flavour has menthol, ripe fruits, strong malty notes. Some grapefruit and burning alcohol in the finish. An english strong ale on steroids.

Can. Light haze on this amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Smooth palate, fairly light, decent fine carbonation. Smooth malts, just a trace of creamy malt. Mellow caramel. Pinch of spice. Modest ripe fruits and some mild esters on the smooth and semi dry finish. Not bad, could do with a little more depth.
