(Cask at Penderel’s Oak JDW, Holborn, London, 19 May 2010) Dark brown colour with hints of ruby, creamy pale brown head. Malty, slightly smoky nose with notes of dried fruit. Malty, slightly fruity taste with dried fruit, raisins, caramel and hints of smoke. Medium body, slightly sweetish, with a moderate bitterness. A decent mild with a smoky twist.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Mahogany with a dense beige head; perhaps a touch of light smoke aroma, although I might have been swayed by the description on the pump clip; Very thinly bodied with some nutty malt flavours and a dry, watery, finish.

Cask @ Hengler’s Circus, JDW. Dark brown colour, medium tan head. Aroma is slightly roasted malts. Flavour is a hint of roasted malts, bit of fruits, earthy. Watery and light bodied. Poor mild.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol 11/05/10. Dark brown with a creamy, tan head. Sickly sweet, with plenty of syrupy fruit, chocolate and a trace of roasty malts. Not very nice.

On our way to watch Preston vs QPR at Deepdale we stopped at Finneys Sports Bar for a half pint hand-pulled cask of this mild ale. Pours a very dark coloured body with ruby highlights. Thin brownish hue. Roasted malty to the nose. Modest sweet smoked malt in flavour supplied by dark chocolate and by a welcoming bitter aftertaste. Quite crispy in the mouth. Overall a pleasant version of the style (03.05.2009).
