15th Dec 2012: my first draught beer of the day at the 18th Essen Christmas Beer Festival. Dark and Stout-like in appearance, tanned head and all that. Strong aroma and taste of both coffee and chocolate in equal measures with hints if liquorice in the taste, drying finish and a good start to my tasting day.

Draft at the Essen Christmas Beer Festival. Poured a dark mahogany with a round tan head. The aroma is smoky and of roasted malt. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with liqourice and malt. There is little on the palate and the beer is surprisingly smooth with little alcohol burn.

Draught Gushing to overflowing cream-tan head over fully black beer; textbook lace; Roasted, charred, bit meatroastsides-like, but also charbon; ureum. Sweet-roasted, and a bit mineral, not quite salty. And in the finish, a faint but unmistakable mintflavour - strange. Medium bodied, but feels better bodied; very slick, grist-like slickness. Good try, even when it’s not a patch on what’s done these days in the USA, Denmark or even the UK - or Oostvleteren...

6/X/2012 - on tap @ Modeste Bierfestival (Antwerpen) - BB: n/a (2012-1119)

Very dark brown beer, creamy beige to brown head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit smelly, coffee, grains, oats, mocha. MF: lively carbon, full body. Tase: mocha, coffee, caramel, bitter hops, chocolate. Aftertaste: mocha, bitter hops, cocoa powder, very dry and hoppy ending. Very decent!
