26/II/21 - 33cl can from La Source webshop, shared @ home, BB: 16/XI/21 (2021-162)

Clear dark brown to black beer, big creamy solid beige to light brown head, stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very malty, grains, some soy sauce, soft roast, cow fodder, very rural character, some coffee, some dried plums, hint of peat, charcoal. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: bit sourish, pretty malty, good roast, caramel touch, grains, dry and hoppy, quite some alcohol noticeable. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, hoppy, rather dry in the finish, lots of alcohol, malty, sourish touch, some chocolate notes, dried fruits, raisins and dried cranberries, roasted finish, pretty complex, very decent beer.

Strong stout with miso, intended as an “umami stout”; thanks 77ships for sharing. Thick, yellowish-beige, mousy, irregularly edged head over a blackish beer with hazy mahogany hue. Aroma of molasses, beef stock, ‘drop’, vegetable ‘bouillon’ or indeed miso soup, marmite, caramel, hazelnut, wet leather. Indeed pronounced ‘meaty’ umami flavours in the onset, beef stock- and miso soup-ish, mixed with sweet candied fruit accents, softly carbonated; full, oily mouthfeel, caramelly and pecan-nutty maltiness, smooth and warmed by brown rum-like alcohol in the end, where a herbal hop bitterishness, black chocolateyness and this beefy umami flavour linger for a while. Umami indeed, but backed up by enough sweetness and bitterness for good measure; I love umami flavours in food but less so in beer so I am not convinced if this was such a good idea to begin with, but have some well-deserved extra points for audacity.

33cl can, BB 16/11/2021, lot# P164.
