Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.
After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.
It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Bottled, 2007 A thick, syrupy barley wine with a lot of fruit and yeah, very sherryish.

12 oz. bottle, to-go from Capone's. Murky, dull, brown color, with a thin, fleeting beige head. The nose is cherry wood, pecan, heather, blueberry, toasted pine, and heavy earth. Dry and musty, with a mellow, earthy bitterness. Medium to heavy body, sticky, and astringent. Bold and dry.

Bottle from 2006.
dark amber pour, looks like a bitter.
Aroma of alcohol, brandy, cherries, caramel malt, and a touch of hops. The flavor of booze hits you right in the face, then comes some more of those sweet cherry/brandy flavors. Finished semi bitter, and a touch sweet. Meh, not a big fan of this, i was expecting more of an american barley wine, but looks like i got an english barley wine with too much booze.

Notes from July 2009 Half growler from New Beer. I'm having some trouble sleeping. :) Into my trusty Ommegang stem. Tasty-looking clear honey amber color. An inch of floppy creamer head. Smells like an overabundance of caramel & macerated grain. Hot! To a lesser extent, oily bitter rind, a bit of a black tea character, & a little plastic smoke. Sweet tea & caramel. Alcohol is way less harsh then I remember it in the bottle. Doesn't mean I can't feel it. :DDD Toasty, dusty grain, drying oak & oxidation. Bitterness is pungent leafyness. Taste is totally unfamiliar. This must be an older keg. Body is heavy, body is slick. There is a decent sizzle to the carbonation, as well as a nice dryness on the finish. This is not the beer I remember. It's better. I think I have another beer in me. :)

355ml bottle [10.1% abv, 2012 vintage]. Clear, brown-ish, dark ruby colour with late awakening, small, creamy, fading, off-white head. Grassy, minimally perfumed and soapy, hoppy aroma, rather unspecific, malty background. Taste is sweet-ish, minimally sugary, caramel malty, bitter, slightly grassy, minimally herbal hoppy, a touch of mint and menthol, caramel with treacle, malt lozenge and liquorice aspects. Oily to viscous texture, super-soft, smooth, silky palate, very fine, soft carbonation. Balanced and harmonious, not overly rich - OK.

Bottle, 355 ml courtesy of Slaven. Shared with Miro B and Max. 2011 vintage. Hazy orange, beige head. Malty, caramel, just a tad sweet with bitter finish. Some tea notes. Bit disappointing at first, gets better later on. No carbonation.

Draught @ Ginger Man-NYC (2/26/20). Apparently not retired at all! Murky brown with large spongy beige head, light caramel aroma, low carbonation, bitter woodsy mocha/roasted malt taste, smooth body, long bitter finish. Very smooth and well covered ABV.

04.04.2015, 0,35l bottle (2004 vintage) @ Akkurat Bar & Restaurant:
Nice creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is very mild, raisins, riesling grape juice, butterscotch, grass, caramel malts, minerals, nuts, burnt candied sugar. Taste is very mild, butterscotch, nuts, raisins, hay, minerals, cereal, caramel malts, chocolate, alcohol, burnt candied sugar, grass. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel. Not bad at all, very mild and balanced. It's just a little boring, I've had so much better before...

From Mar 2008

I got this in a trade with nutbrown. Thanks Alan!

It pours a clear copper with close to a 2 finger head of foam with some nice sticky lacing. After several minutes, the foam shrinks to a fine broken layer.

The smell gives me notes of caramel malt and some fruit with just a smidgeon of hops.

The taste leans towards the sweet side(appropriate for the style) with heaping helpings of caramel malt working side by side with a nice fruitiness. More sips in and the hops start kicking in for some balance and I'm getting some sherry and more fruit. I'm a fan of English Barleywines and I think this is a pretty darned good example of the style. Nice medium mouthfeel and fairly light in the carbonation, it finishes slightly on the bitter side and has a good long lasting aftertaste. With it snowing outside after it being near 50 degrees yesterday, this was a good choice for my first brew of the day as it does give me a bit of warming after the swallow but other than that, the abv is well hidden.

Bottom line: Another very nice brew from Brooklyn that I'd drink again without hesitation.
Very true to the style.
