As St Amand. Dark golden with lots of floaters and a good sized off white head. Sweet malts and light bread, some spices, spruce, juniper and light pepper. There’s a bit of mixed fruit juice in the aroma but no fruity taste. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with good amount of mouthcoating carbonation. Decent blond.

Lekko kwaskowy, miodowy, słodki i suchy - ziemisty.

Tasted several times under its regular name Ne Kopstoot but now re-rating as Abbaye de St. Amand, which is apparently exactly the same beer. Slow gusher, but manageable. What remains, is a medium sized, dispersed yet stable (remaining closed), off-white, moussy head sitting on top of a lightly hazy ’old gold’ coloured beer with strings of tiny bubbles piercing through here and there. Aroma of juniper berries indeed, mixed with impressions of freshly cut apples, dried orange peel, lightly toasted bread, pink pepper, dried apricot, something thinly sulfuric (melting rubber - DMTS?), dried wormwood, peach, unripe gooseberry, fennel seed (probably just the juniper berries again), soggy sandwiches, green banana, unripe pear, fresh white pepper. Sweetish, fruity onset of pear, pineapple, peach and slight banana with a balancing unripe plum-like ’wryness’ positioned against it in a sharply carbonated, fizzy, somewhat numbing environment. Reasonably ’full’ and lean body coarsened by the overcarbonation, fruity remains here and there, while a strongish phenolic spiciness arises, likely a combination of actual spicy phenols with the slightly resinous, somewhat wry effect of the juniper berries, mingling with an earthy, spicy hop bitterishness in the end, lightly drying the palate in a (too) gentle way; alcohol remains well hidden. Resinous spiciness (even palpable on the tongue as something vaguely glue-like) and lingering malt juiciness remain after swallowing, while the hops provide some balance against the latter. I hate ’jenever’ and juniper berries to begin with so this was never ’my’ beer in the first place, but technically this is quite alright, I have to admit - especially in comparison with some other Brunehaut beers I had throughout the years. I guess you’ll have to like the resinous and somewhat wry spiciness of juniper berries but I sincerely do not (I have noticed young people pouring down blonde beer with a dash of ’jenever’ in it when I was a young adolescent of about fifteen years of age, tried it too, and hated it - and this combination of pale beer flavor with ’jenever’ flavor somehow got stuck into my mind as something abhorrent; this beer subtly but surely reminds me of that). Never again, for me at least, but I try not to let personal taste preferences interfere and for what it intends to be, this is not badly executed.

Bottle @ home. Hazy yellow-golden color, full sized white head that lasts for a decent while. Smell and taste malts, a bit dusty, a hint of fruityness that reminds me of apple mixed with some kind of berries [Edit: only after rating I saw that the description actually says it’s juniper berries] and passion fruit, some sweet-bitter. Medium body and carbonation.Earlier Rating: 7/6/2011 Total Score: 2.8Color isn’t great, but not bad either. Taste decent. Smell not very nice. Decent carbo, medium body.
