Pour this over pancakes. Vast in character, luscious and complex, Immort Ale was born at our brewpub in 1995 and made its way into bottles in 1997.
For this beer, we use maple syrup from Red Brook Farm (Sam's family farm in Western Massachusetts), peat-smoked barley and vanilla.
Immort is fermented with a blend of English and Belgian yeasts, then aged in the big oak tanks at the brewery.
The sweet and earthy flavors meld magnificently in the Immort Ale. But be warned, the ABV is 11%.

2007 Vintage. Thanks Alex. Bottle @ Miss January / AA Meeting Afterparty Tasting, March 2012. Pours cloudy ruby amber with a creamy white head and lacings. Vinous nose. Matured fruit, port , vanilla, dark fruit and caramel. Flavor has a bit of oxidation. Lots of plum, vanilla, raisin, caramel and port. Full bodied. A sipper. Quite nice . . Still.

On tap at City Beer. Sweet and syrupy. Pours copper with minimal head. Sweet and viscous flavor with smoke background coming out late as the beer warms. Sticky mouthfeel. Cloying. [Rating upped from a 3.3 after drinking a 2006 aged vintage at Abbot’s Cellar at a dinner with Sam]. Aged nicely.

Purchased at In Fine Spirits in Chicago, IL; enjoyed after running and finishing a half marathon on a cold, windy January afternoon. Appearance a red/orange hybrid with a thin white head that rims around the glass. Aroma is nice and complex, slight sweet, vanilla notes, maple, dark fruit, light smoke, and oak. Taste is good, alcohol burn in the back end but masks it quite well, maple shines a bit more with a smoke/oak presence. It’s pretty good, having a difficult time trying to review it. It’s good, not my favorite barley wine, but it’s good.

Draught @ City Beer, San Francisco, CA
Pours reddish orange with a small bubbly head. Strong malty aroma with notes of syrup, ash and smoke. Taste is quite malty and sweet with notes of smoke, ash and maple syrup. Warming, sweet and slightly spicy finish. Okay, a bit untypical barley wine.

12 oz bottle. Pours cloudy burnt orange to almost ruby red with minimal beige head. Aroma is muted caramel--or maybe it’s the maple syrup, hard to tell. Taste is really exotic! The vanilla and maple syrup are very prominent; juniper berries, too. Mouthfeel is oily and the carbonation is pretty high for the style. An excellent tasting beer with very little aroma. Addendum: I can’t let this beer get away with such a low score just because of the almost non-existant aroma. Towards the end of the glass, the juniper berries come through, raising my score a little bit.

Draft. Clear amber color, small off white head. Aroma of lightly spiced caramel. Taste of subtle spiced brown bread. Not bad.

Bottle @ home. Hmmm, sounds like a pretty interesting concotion- ppeat smoked barley, vanilla and maple syrup, juniper berries. I’m excited to see if they pulled this one off. Clear, burnt orange appearance with a big, fluffy, light brown head. Good lacing. Maple syrup, oak, peaty smoke, a touch fruity, rich malty aroma. At first you ge t the maple and vanilla syrup and caramel malty sweetness followed by a mild to moderate peaty smoke that is prevalent on the finish. Oak throughout. I only get a mild note of the juniper berries. Pretty sweet beer overall strangely interacts pretty well the peaty smoke. Another interesting beer from DFH but I’m glad I didn’t pick up more than one of these.
