Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Clear amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of butterscotch and a little nuts. Medium body, sweet caramel and nuts with a fairly dry and hoppy finish. 171210

500ml bottle. Pours dark amber with a large, frothy head. Aroma is grass and caramel malt. Caramel and bready start with a slightly spicy hop finish. Nice but a bit boring.

500ml from Sainsbury’s Folkestone. Lovely red brown clear colour. Then it all starts going wrong. The inital aroma is just pasteurised to buggery British bottled beer. If you dig deeper you do get the Sheps yeast, the decent rich fruit from the original beer and some good peppery hop. But then in the mouth the pasteurisation takes it’s toll on the flavour and mouthfeel, leaving a sense of emptiness and the ghost of what is a very good Kentish beer. I had the choice between this and Marstons Old Empire. I now know which one I would have preferred.

Clear coppery red with a decent head. Nice hop aroma with some malt and caramel. Medium body with good carbonation. Flavour is a nice complex mix of tangy fruitiness with malty biscuity taste and good hoppyness developing into a nice bitter finish. A lovely beer.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Bright reddish-amber in colour with a short-lived off-white head. Aroma of caramel, dusty hops and hay. Flavour had a slight tang of pasteurisation (boiled sweets), before some vaguely spicy hops, red fruit and a short, bitter finish. OK.

Red brown colour with a thick, heavy white head. Aroma is a little hoppy as is the initial flavour then some sweet red fruits. A more roasted malty flavour comes through at the end.

Largish beige shiny lasting head. Chestnut brown body with vigorous carbonation. Nutty, hoppy, caramelly malty aroma with grain notes. Dry, nutty caramelly taste with metallic sweetish licorice notes. Sweetish licorice and caramel aftertaste. Very nice. (0.5l bottle at the Ashburnham Arms, Greenwich.)

bottle - Pours amber with a two finger head. It smells mainly of caramel malt with some light hops. The flavor is a pretty good balance between the caramel malts and the bitterness. It’s a decent brew, but doesn’t stand out.
