Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue’s Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole’ black and tan!

Bottle as shown. Pours a clear copper amber with a small frothy white head that leaves sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a bready malt with spice and peppers. Thin mouthfeel with a smokey pepper flavor and dry spicy finish. The chipotle is a little overpowering, a decent spice brew from Rogue.

Draft sample from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear amber color with a large tan creamy head. Excellent head retention and lacing. Aroma is smoky and woody with some hickory-like notes. Taste is smoky with a light spicy burn that grows on the palate. Grows a bit too much actually. Some leafy hop notes. Medium bodied.

Interesting. On tap at Rattle n Hum. Pours a a dark orange with a slight white head. Nose of sweet malts and spicy peppers. At first, the taste is not very spicy, but that quickly changes, especially on the swallow. The chipotle flavor is pervasive and lingering. Medium body. A crisp, sharp finish. I could never see this beer as anything more than a novelty for me, but it’s nice to have something different now and again.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 8/27/14, as Rogue Farms Chipotle Ale
Aroma: The nose is fairly light, some peppery notes, caramel/buttery malts, and other spice
Appearance: It pours a dark orange-reddish color with a small head and some mild lace
Flavor: Malty and quite spicy, not a hot/peppery spice, but one that makes the flavor one-dimensional
Palate: The body is medium, it has an okay mouthfeel, a little too much carbonation, spicy/tingly finish
Overall Impression: Well this one was probably due for a re-rate, since that old one is 5-6 years old, and was of the old incarnation of what is (apparently) the same beer. Anyway, I still don't love it, but my old rating may have been a bit harsh. There's too much buttery malt, too much carbonation, too much non-descript spice, and not enough specifically chipotle character here.

Overall Impression: Nothing special, differntish, if that's your goal. I wouldn't recommend it.

12 oz bottle. No real aroma, just bright and shiny on the olfactory. Slight haze on an otherwise yellow orange brown beer. Good tingly carbonation. Generally bitter and ale like but with this heat thing going on. Heat and warmth makes this a little more interesting than the typical ale. Bitter aftertaste personality. Nifty finish with a medium hot pepper burn. End of finsih is a penetrating astringent roof of mouth impression. Glad I tried this even tho it was $2 more than my average beer.

Tap @ Bar Great Harry. Aroma is surprisingly diacetyl, very strong butterscotch but underneath that the traditional Rogue hop mix is present. Taste has no diacetyl or at least the chipotle takes over. I forgot how strong the pepper is, oh man it burns the throat. And the smoke is present as well from the peppers. The malts are nice and clean paving the way for the peppers to play the pivotal role in the flavor. Just from past experiences, I never have had diacetyl in a Rogue beer and I do not remember the peppers being so spicy in the bottled version.

Bottle. A golden, slightly hazy beer with a small, off-white head. Quite hoppy on the nose, with pine and fluor, and a nice malty sweetness. The flavor is more on the malty side, but there’s also a nice hoppy bitterness and a warming chili flavor. Full-bodied. The chili is more evident in the finish, and it gives a lasting warming feeling. Nice one, but far from outstanding. Whitout the chili, it would probably get a .3 lower score. (080708)

22 fl oz bottle. Pours almost golden orange with a lacing white head. Woody, spiced and light smoked aroma. Flavour starts smooth malty and gains a slight vegetable note with a mild burning chili finish. Finish is slowly increasing in burning intensity from the chili.

This brew is a clear amber color with a thick and creamy off-white head that recedes slowly. Thin rings of lacing on the glass. Smokey aroma with prominent peppers and light hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of spicy pepper, sweet malt and citrus hops. The finish is spicy with a fresh pepper aftertaste. Maybe I am still gunshy years after my Cave Creek experience but I really want nothing to do with these types of beers.
