Cask-conditioned at the Knights Templar JDW, Bristol 3/1/09. Near black with a decent tan head. Aroma was roasty, with some milk chocolate. Flavour began with a touch of sweet caramel, more chocolate, creamy coffee and a decent bitter finish. An enjoyable stout on a cold winter’s day.

Bottle picked up at Waitrose, Thame, Oxon Wonderful aroma, lovely bitter/sweet chocolate very pushy and some nice soft maltiness mmhhh... The taste is equally good as well the chocolate makes a welcome reappearance but this time it comes striding in with some hitherto unnoticed coffee, there is other stuff in there as well but I stopped writing and started tasting in earnest, lovely. Had this before at the brewery on cask a few years back but never got around to rating, so nice to try a bottle conditioned example.

Bottle: Deep mahagony coloured, small fluffy tanned head; dry dark-malty and roast-malty nose with a tinge of fruitiness and an illusion of molasses, hops detectable; moderate dry bitter flavour, light bodied; dry - again - fruity-bitter finish, a touch of burnt grain; with a lingering chocolatey bitterness. Good well-crafted and spicy stuff........

Cask at Willow Walk JDW Victoria, London Wow this was a real eye opener. Black stout with a creamy feel in the mouth, but such depths of flavour in the malts. Not just the usual chocolate and coffee but nuts and all sorts of dark fruits. Wonderful

Cask Conditioned
Very dark color. Nice aroma, combination of roasted malt, caramel, ripe apple. Good body structure, some malty caramel, light fresh apple fruitness. Good hopping, partially aromatic. Interesting, very drinkable.
