Bottle. It pours a reddish dark brown body, next to black, and topped by a dense but small beige head. The aroma has quite a lot of butterscotch, as well as roasted matls, cooked vegetable notes and some burnt hints. Not very interesting. Neither the aroma nor the flavor. There’s some bitterness towards the end of the flavor, Roasted malts, cooked vegetables and some butterscotch. Well, won’t miss this one. 130119

Certainly Black, but not completely, has a glow about it. No head. Fairly dry texture with a mild sweet aroma, and less than mild flavour which has a hint of fruit.

Flip-top half-litre bottle from a local Aldi store: best before 22 June 2013, poured into a Wolnzacher Brauhaus tall glass tankard on 8 Dec 2012 (@ home). Looked great: huge tan coloured head of foam sat on top of a deep, dark ruby red body. The brew was clear and clean when held up to a good light source. The aroma given off was minimal: some German rye bread and maltiness with a touch of grain in the background. Taste wise it came to life a little: malty, semi-sweet and lively in the mouth feel. I’ve struggled with this style before: having trouble finding any strong flavours and any depth, this was better than most. Far from robust and flavoursome it did however have something about it. There are chocolate and coffee notes in the taste and it does feel a little richer than most German Black Lagers I’ve encounted. Considering the price (less than two pounds): this was a good deal.

50cl swing-top bottle from Aldi. Muddy chestnut-brown with a loose translucent beige head; malty aroma; thin, sweet, malty body; and lacking a finish. Poor.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks Dror. Brown-colored. Malty aroma with caramel, light cheap chocolate hints and light roasty notes. Sweet flavor with malt, a bit of chocolate, caramel, nutty hints and a bit of roastiness, mostly towards the finish. Medium-bodied. Drinkable.
