very very dark ruby pour, with a very small beige head. Aroma is spice, black licorice, and mollasses with a good amount of malt. Flavour is loaded with licorice, with some nice malt in the end. The finish is again more licorice, and some good malt notes on the end of my tongue, a nice beer, but really it’s like a licorice beer.

Bouteille 341ml. De couleur rouge-brune foncée et claire. Nez de réglisse noire sucrée (anis), malté de caramel toffee avec des notes fumées, boisées et de chocolat, légèrement fruitée (raisins) ainsi que léger de noix et de houblon herbeux. Moyennement ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen-bas et une texture moyennement crémeuse et aux petites notes sirupeuses. Moyen-goût fruité (raisins aux petites notes vineuses, notes de dates et de prunes) accompagné dun goût de réglisse noire (anis, intense) ainsi que des petites notes fumées lors de lentrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un goût malté de caramel toffee moyennement rôti (notes brûlées et traces terreuses) et sucré, léger de chocolat noir et avec des traces de mélasse et de sirop dérable. Parallèlement, lon retrouve un petit goût dalcool liquoreux aux notes réchauffantes jusqu en finale où lon y retrouve également un léger goût de houblon herbeux ainsi qu un léger goût de noix et des notes boisées et épicées (regain d’anis, faibles traces de gingembre). Post-goût moyen-long et un peu sec, moyennement amer de rôti, de chocolat noir, de houblon herbeux avec un goût épicé (anis), un léger goût fruité (moût de raisins) et des notes dalcool et de noix.

Brown bottle, 341 ml, brewed at Microbrasserie St-Arnould, purchased at Le Grand Duc, savoured on November 7 2008; eye: dark ruby, clear, slight effervescence, beige head that turns into a tiny ring, no lacing; nose: caramelized malt, scotch briefly, brown sugar, black liquorice candy, candied fruits; mouth: caramelized malt, liquorice, scotch, finale in liquorice, mildly sweet, lightly bitter, medium-thin body, surprisingly thin, not much carbonation; overall: correct FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 341 ml, brassée chez Microbrasserie St-Arnould, achetée chez Le Grand Duc, savourée le 6 novembre 2008; œil : rubis foncé, claire, très légère effervescence, mousse beige qui se transforme en un petit anneau, pas de dentelle; nez : malt caramélisé, scotch brièvement, cassonade, bonbon à la réglisse noire, fruits confits; bouche : malt caramélisé, réglisse, scotch, finale en réglisse, moyennement sucrée, légèrement amère, corps moyen-mince, curieusement mince, peu carbonatée; en résumé : correct

A deep dark brown ale with reddish hues, and a thin moka head. A pleasant aroma of chocolate, butterscotch and molasses, with good vinous notes, and a bit of vanilla. In mouth, an oily mouthfeel of burned caramel, licorice, and treacle. A bit short, but overall, a good representation of the style. Bottle bought at Jovi, Hull, 2.99$.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with some retention and good lacing. Aroma is a ix between some chocolates and caramel notes with some distinctive star anises notes. Taste is also a nice mix between some robust caramel malt notes with some light touch of black chocolate and some easily distinctive notes of star anises. Full body with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I really enjoyed the spicy take on the scotch ale style and I did not think it was too dominant as other prior reviews.
