(Bottle, Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with notes of caramel, dark bread, raisins and dried fruit. Malty, roasted taste with dark bread, raisins and caramel. Slightly grassy bitterness. Medium body, balanced sweetness. A decent dark lager.

12oz bottle. Filtered amber brown color with a small beige head. Medium bodied, some choco-toffee sweetness. Still has that macro aroma unfortunately. Some rich caramel tones as well. Certainly a step up from typical Capital swill, this one is actually flavorful and refreshing, as advertised...as for the finest dark beer in America, they must be out of their minds. No real hops to speak of besides the initial crispness. Nice and rich malt tones, that never get too sticky or overbearing. Lagered out and smooth, with solid specialty malt nuances.

Bottled ay Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Clear deep ruby, minimal head. Roasty bready nose with raisiny undertones. Mid-sry with clean mouthfeel and light-medium body. Behind a whiff of butterscotch some light salty bitterness comes out. A clean and sterile beer, very superficial.

Bottle from Archer Liquors. Pours a darkish ruby with a large beige head. Aroma of mildly darkish caramel. Near medium body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is smooth roasted caramel with a little bit of raisin or plum. Seems a tad nutty. Finishes unbitter, but not excessively sweet.

Clear medium brown body that throw up a large long lasting tan head. Rich, clean, malty aroma. Good solid malty sweetness delivered on a medium full body. Well done, I’ll have another of these please.

2004 or 2005 bottle big thanks to Robertsreality, this was awesome! Light caramel/muted-nut-brown with some light oak tones on the edges. Light beige/dark-eggshell head recedes fairly rapidly to ring. Only lightly filtered. Rich 2-row and munich malt aroma is immediately perceived. Dark, rich, soily black earth, with some light vinous notes. Flavor has a fantastic amount of malt. Caramel, brown bread dough. Rich dark sugar and caramelized honey. Rich English toffee. But through all of the richness, it is horribly drinkable! Lightly yeasty, dry earthy notes on end. Low hops bitterness and flavor. Natural mouthfeel with low carbonation, very aerated texture. I could definitely stand to drink this as my session beer day in and day out. Bits of berry skins linger with some leafy, foresty hops flavor.

Beautiful, just really good stuff. Reddish chocolatey color, rich chocolatey toffee candy aroma. Enticing nose, couldn’t wait to drink it, and I didn’t. Rounded chocolate toffee caramel flavor, exceptionally smooth. Yea, the carbonation was a little low, but the amazing smoothness made up for it. You could almost think this was nitro’d, but of course it isn’t.

Not bad, but not as full bodied as some Czech examples. Aroma has some nuts and roasted malt. Flavor is malty as well, with lightly roasted grain and a dry finish. It is very drinkable. It could use more body but otherwise good. More of a Vienna than a dunkel.

Appearance: dark beer, a little lighter that others I have had, with very little head. Smell: caramel Taste: does not have a strong taste until the bitter aftertaste. This is not one of the better dark beers I have had. Mouthfeel: thin and unmemorable. Drinkability: Sure you could drink it, but you can also drink The Beast. This is not one of the better dark beers I've had, so I'm not going to resample this one.

Bottled. Reading these other descriptions, I wonder just what was in my bottle. Color was fine, head foamed up but dissipated quickly. I caught a big whiff of sorghum & molasses, like you get when you brew with a dark malt extract. Couldn't find roast malt notes at all. But then the other dark lagers I've tried lately have been very lacking in uniformity, so maybe this is closer to style than I realize. Eminently enjoyable, but not what I expected.
Re-rated; Draft. From the tap it comes off somewhat better; a decent dark roast taste. I think I almost an allergic reaction from the hop nose?
