Czech style black lager. Our Coolship Lager Black gains its signature color from the use of European roasted malts. It is brewed using a traditional double decoction mash and hopped with fine European fine noble hops. After the boil it rests in our copper coolship for 1 hour. It is then transferred over our baudelot cooler into our open tanks for fermentation. After a cool fermentation using a classic Czech lager yeast, it is cellared for several months prior to release.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a fairly opaque dark brown glow with a thinnish, two centimetre tall off-white and tan head that fades fairly slowly. Aroma of roasted and crisp malts with some oatmeal and a healthy hand of caramelised sugars with a touch of coffee noticeable. Light to Medium-bodied; Very rich roasty and deep flavours show at first with some lightly smoked peaty notes with a lot of bitterness and a dry grainy bite towards the end with a touch of vanilla towards the end. Aftertaste is rich, slightly sweet from pitted fruits and caramelised sugars and a heavy bite of lactose and cream, but the malts and oats still dominate here with a touch of tofffee and a good balance throughout. Overall, a nice, very crisp and super flavourful beer with a lot of range and depth, but a smooth, bitter and pungent bite and some subtle lager yeasts show towards the very end. Nice to sample and a good beer to sample if you can find it! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Joe Canal's in Lawrenceville, New Jersey on 21-December-2020 for US$2,99 sampled at my house here in Washington on 15-March-2021.

Can at home. Ruby dark brown pour and a smaller head. Nose is chocolate and roast. Tastes of earth, ash, toffee and coffee and cocoa. Finishes like you just made out with a chain smoker. Smooth lager and interesting brew.

16 ounce can. Translucent dark brown color. Large rocky tan head. Slightly roasty malt aroma reminiscent of brown bread. Sweet roasted malt flavor hints at chocolate cake. Mildly spicy from the noble hops. Earthy, caramel notes in middle. Slightly sticky mouthfeel.

Can pour from Manchester Wine and Liquors. Appearance is dark brown (cloudy mahogany-brown with light source directly behind) with tons of sparkle, 2-finger plus light brown foamy head with excellent retention and trace soapy lacing. Aroma is earthy roasted malts, nuts and molasses. Taste follows aroma--but stronger--with sweet toffee followed by earth, minerals, mildly nutty roasted malts and hint of dark fruit. Mouthfeel is medium side of light-to-medium bodied with smooth, frothy texture, soft carbonation and earthy malt with noble hop finish. Overall, well done representative of the style. Good strength and decent complexity.

Pour is a more dark brownish with a small tan head. Aroma is a decent char and roasted malt. Flavor is more roasted and slightly charred malt. I don't know what fermenting this is a coolship added but it's a ok dark large with more roasted malt than some others.

Very nice dark lager, offering up deep, layered notes of roasted malt, cocoa, and caramel, but maintaining a gentle crispness behind the dark beer goodies. Undertones of black cherry and apple, with a mild floral bitter streak popping up on the finish. Long, toasty fade laced with char. What a nice pint.
