500 ml bottle, batch #1774, from the brewery. ABV is 4.5%. Very dark brown to black colour, large beige head. Strong aroma of smoked and roast malts. Fairly dry flavour, a certain fruitiness helps the drinkability a lot, otherwise the notes are of smoked and roast malts, with moderate notes of juniper berries.

50cl bottle from Gulating ølutsalg, Larvik - enjoyed at the viewpoint at Gaupekollen, Oslo. Maybe it didn’t like the climb up the hill, it was a bit eager to come out of the bottle. Dark mahogany with a large beige head. Malty and roasty aroma with a fair amount juniper and hints of pine and smoked wood. Moderate sweet and surprisingly flavourful with some slightly sour notes and a pleasant bitterness. Tasty and very enjoyable ale that certainly fits well at a hike in the forest. --- Beer merged from original tick of Malmen -Juniper Black Ale on 28 May 2017 at 12:21 - Score: 7

Flaske 500ml fra Gulating Tromsø. Svart. Filmskum med litt farge. Aroma av skog. Myk munnfølelse. Smaken behagelig krydret. Gjennomgående preg av trær. God balanse. Grei - men lite variasjon. Mye bunnfall.

Bottle, from the brewery. A deep reddish chestnut colored beer with a dense, finger-thick beige head that lasts. Cute lacing. The aroma has a solid dose of juniper, with roasted notes, bonfire hints, some coffee grit and chocolate and even some dried fruit. It’s super smooth on the palate, more or less full-bodied, with a pleasant blend of bitterness, sweetness and sourness. Roasted and burnt malts, coffee and chocolate notes, some prunes and some earthy brazil nut, as well as juniper, some orange notes I guess is from the kveik yeast, and a salty touch. Even some damp spruce forest. Long roasted, burnt finish with a subtle orange, coffee, juniper and nut touch. This was a really delicious one, especially when it warms up to above 10 degress C. Sure gonna have to stock up on this. 170514

Bottle from Gulating Brennåsen. Dark brown, almost black body with a nice, stable, lacing tan head. Nice aroma, dark, gentle smoked malt, chocolate and herbs with a hint of sour berries. Flavor is mild roasted, smoked dark malt, juniper, berries, moderate bitterness and hint of acidic. Medium to light body and average aftertaste dominated by dark malt. Nice aroma and OK flavor for a few sips, but it ends up a bit one-dimensional when finishing a bottle.
