Sour stout by one of Brussels’ most proliferous craft breweries, honouring the eagle owl, a magnificent creature rarely seen in Belgium (I saw a breeding pair in an abandoned quarry in the Ardennes once – but I digress). Thanks tderoeck! Pale greyish beige, moussey, creamy head on a blackish, but actually very dark chocolate brown beer with burgundy glow. Aroma of balsamic vinegar, moist black chocolate bars, oxidized red wine, dried prunes, caramel, damp forest floor, sourdough, elderberries, old wood, indeed a whiff of the whisky on which it is aged (Belgian Owl), grape skin, tea, some horseblanket. Tart, estery onset, prunes, blackberries and elderberries, some sweetishness and very light black olive-like umami, moderately carbonated with smooth, full mouthfeel; walnutty, caramelly and toasty malts fill the middle, some dark chocolate notes in a ‘dirty’ way (as if fallen on a forest floor and picked up again, but I mean this in a positive way). The tartness and woodiness from the barrel treatment work together to establish an earthy dryness, with herbal hops accentuating this earthiness further; berry-like fruity esters linger till the end, along with lovely bittering toastiness, ongoing earthiness and vinous tartness. Like other sour stouts, very earthy, ‘balsamic’, ‘foresty’ and oud bruin-like, with enough complexity to remain interesting throughout. We need more sour stouts in this world.

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy dense beige head, a little stable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: fruity, brett notes, acidic, very sour, vinegar touch, dusty, some caramel, fruity touch. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter, dry, soft acidity, bitter, some tannins, grapeskins, meh. Aftertaste: fruity touch, blackberries, spicy touch, decent!

Bouteille 37.5cl, BB 16/12/2021, batch# 001. Cela fait un bon bout de temps que j'attendais pour la déguster.
Couleur acajou/cuivre, col épais crémeux blanc-cassé.
Arôme est sur une bonne dose de malts - ici du bon chocolaté, grillé, café avec un nez tirant presque sur une vieille brune voire rouge des Flandres - notes de fruits rouges en rétro-nasal. Entre ces notes finement aigres, je retrouve le côté fin d'une pointe de vanille de la barrique.
Palais est délicat avec tout de même un côté 'sour' bien marqué qui est de suite repris par une très belle base de malt chocolaté, finement caramel, grillé avec un effet de café et chocolat noir amer. Mise en barrique du whisky belge 'Belgian Owl' déjà utilisé par, entre autre, Br Lienne. A cet égard, le caractère de whisky se ressent en fin de bouche, contribuant à l'effet boozy qui cependant reste plaisant. Petite fin de bouche finement épicée avec un effet épices hivernales et de boisé qui s'entrecoupent avec des notes de fruits rouges/noirs. Fini est réchauffant avec un côté fin aigrelet/malté qui est judicieux sans jamais prendre le dessus.

Flaska från Belgiuminabox. Opak, nästan svart brunröd vätska utan skum. Söt vinös doft med mörka bär, mörk stenfrukt, sött rött vin, fat, kryddor, vanilj, balsamvinäger, choklad, tobak. Komplex, stor kropp, söt, syrlig, tung och samtidigt elegant. Jag brukar ha svårt för mörka suröl men med så stor kropp blir det riktigt gott

37,5cl bottle (BBF: 16/12/2021) from Etre Gourmet web shop. F: big, tanned, creamy, god retention. C: black, opaque. A: oud bruin, caramel, cacao, woody, chocolate, bit red wine, balsamic, light sour red berries. T: full malty base, chocolate, cacao, sour red berries, woody, caramel, lactic touch, coffee, soft carbonation, vanilla touch, decent bitterness, something between stout and oud bruin style mixed with wild woody bacteria, for me fully enjoyable beer.

Aus der Flasche (bbe 16.12.2023) im 2021-03 getrunken. Dieser Hybrd zwischen Sour und Stout kommt komplett Schwarz mit einer kurzweiligen, feinporigen Schaumkrone daher. In der Nase zeigt sich schon gleich ein fruchte Säure mit etwas Weintraubenaroma und etwas Essig. Am Gaumen ist der saure Charakter wohl dosiert und die Röstaromen bringen eine Schokoladennote hervor. Auch hier findet sich ein dunkles Weintraubenaroma was überrascht harmonisch zu der Schokolade passt. Ein echt leckeres Bier!
