Cask ale at the brewpub in Oakham. Shared with Finn. Stable fawn-coloured head leaving spotty lacing on the glass. Dark brown body, near-clear. Lightly roasted smell with a prominent touch of dark chocolate. Rather powerful mid-sweet taste profile of dark caramel, chocolate and coffee hints towards the ending. Smooth on the swallow. Nice. (11.02.2019).

On tap at the vaults, Newark. Deep brown colour with a long tam head. Aroma has roasted and slight smokey malt with a touch of chocolate and soft fruit. Tastes mirrors this with a roasted bitter finish. Medium body.

Handpull cask at the brewery tap. Dark brown with a purplish note, opaque. A smooth cream-coloured head on top. Roast malt, strong coffee, a bit of smoke in the aroma. The bitterness of roast malt holds sway, before giving way to a slightly sour astringency. Long and bitter, almost medicinal finish with a metallic note in the aftertaste. I usually like these kinds of beers but the balance issues eclipse the positive aspects.

Cask pint in the brewery tap on 15th March 2016. Very dark body, almost black, the head a creamy tanned deep blanket. Malts all the way here, roasted aroma with both coffee and chocolate flavours coming through in the taste. Slight bitter finish.
