English ’saison’ from this renowned new style brewery, bottle from Beergium (reading 4.9% ABV rather than 5%). Moussy, fairly thick and frothy, egg-white, relatively dense head slowly thinning and lacing in ’dots’, over a hazy straw blonde beer with ochre-ish hue, hazed by a ’fog’ of pale yeast throughout, looking a bit like a witbier, becoming entirely misty and deeper peachy-tinged ochre with sediment. Aroma of bread crust, unripe pear, green banana, dry earth, pineapple, straw, camomile, lemon zest, chalk, gooseberry, damp hay, hints of honey, soap, dry breakfast cereals, garden weeds, raw turnip, potato starch. Crisp, fruity onset, refreshing with hints of pear, green plum and unripe banana, sourish with a sweetish core but both subdued, spritzy carbonation, mineral side effects, supple and lean mouthfeel, bit soapy. Cereally, grainy middle with a softer bready edge becoming stronger in the end due to the yeast, spicy phenols dancing around here and there but nothing medicinal or otherwise unpleasant. Earthy, drying, grassy hop bitterish finish, bit resinous, tonic water-ish but not harsh, quenching and feeling sufficiently ’rural’ to make this beer qualify as a saison indeed; bready yeastiness, malty juiciness and something chalky join in. Very refreshing little beer without any off-flavours, and very Belgian: proof that Belgian ale styles have meanwhile been conquered by creative brewers around the world, and Redchurch seems to understand the saison style better than many young Belgian breweries making attempts at it. If tasted blind, I would readily have situated this somewhere in Flanders. One to drink all day on a proto-spring-like day like this one.

330ml bottle. Hazy, yellow-ish, bright golden colour with small to average, frithy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Slightly herbal, spicy, and fruity, yeasty aroma, diluted hints of brine, a touch of quince, unripe apricot. Taste is dry, slightly bitter, dusty, yeasty spicy, hints of brine, green apple parings, quince; minimally watery, a bit anaemic overall.

Bottle from Santa minutemat, it’s a bit past it’s best before date, but a great extra in a nice Santa box. let’s dig in! Slightly hazy light golden with fizzy white head that leaves a nice film. It has lots of spicy saison yeast up front, not really much ’wild’ character actually. Some cloves, allspice, condensed milk and dried lemon rind. There’s also quite some grassy hops, with light citrus. Light malts, which seem to have some wheat maybe, it’s a bit doughy. Light sweet and bitter, fitting the ABV. Under medium bodied with soft but sparkly carbonation. Enjoyable beer (the first of the new year!). It’s not great but still drinking OK.
