Deep amber in colour, Old Winter Ale is a strong beer with a malt, cookie and liquorice aroma. The prominent Crystal malts add sweet, nutty flavours, balanced by floral notes from Target, Challenger and Northdown hops.

Cask at the Cannie Man, Haworth at 5.3% ABV according to the pumpclip. A chestnut pour with a loose cream head; aroma of fruit cake with a touch of spice; dry in the mouth with caramel and dates, followed by a light spicy bitterness; and a toffee finish. I was expecting more warmth, but the alcohol is very well hidden.

Cask at The Doric Arch. It pours clear rich brown with a medium beige head. The aroma is malt - driven, brown bread, bitter - sweet, toffee, oily, fudge and leather. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, wood, leather, toasted nut, caramel, toffee, peppery spice, grass and tannin with a dry, woody finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Well - rounded and quaffable. Rather decent stuff.
