Tasting Notes

Moa Imperial Stout is a very strong, bold upfront and rich offering of a famous beer style. Aged with French Oak, this beer not only displays coffee and mocha charters but also some sweet and spicy notes. A tannin like finish and an oak induced mellow bitterness makes it a serious stout. Moa Imperial Stout is best served just below room temperature in a tulip glass.

Bottle at CGarvie tasting. It pours near black/very dark brown with a small light tan head. The nose is roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, berry, varnish, coffee and a touch of spice. The taste is roasted malt, earth, charcoal, alcohol warmth, berry, dark fruit, coffee, ash and chocolate with a dry, roasty finish. Very long finish. Medium-full body, fine-moderate carbonation and chewy mouth-feel. Flavoursome and well balanced.

375ml bottle I picked up for $5.99 at Total Wine in Sterling. Pours a watery, although opaque black with some initially frothy, lacing beige head. Nose is interesting, dusty, dried grains, chocolate, grape jelly, some paint thinner. Flavor is better, plenty of red grape juice, some vanilla, some berry, a little coffee with cream, malt, slightly soured almost like pomegranate juice. Surprisingly thin on the palate and surprisingly easy to drink. Kind of a head scratcher.

(Bottle, 0.33 l, at HBF2013) The beer poured black. Its head was quite large and lightly brown. Aroma had roasted malts, liquorice and hops. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were liquorice, roasted malts, coffee, hops and bitterness. Afteraste was roasty and bitter. A good IS.

Draught @ HBF
Aroma has cocoa, salty licorice and soy sauce. Flavour has salty licorice, soy sauce and hints of ash. Also some plastic feeling here. Just too salty.

330ml bottle @ HBF 2013

Pours pitch black with a foamy head. Aroma of roasty malts, hints of spices, chocolate and coffee. Taste is roasty and bitter with hints of chocolate and coffee. Finish is sweetish and salty roasty with some coffee notes. Quite balanced and tasty imperial stout.

Bottle (Pinot Barrel). Pours with a nearly black body with a lasting off-white head. Aromas are rich, nutty, roasty, fig newton (sp?), mineral, roast, a bit acrid. Flavors are of a heavy handed use of roasted barley, acrid roast, mineral, banana nuts, dry, moderate alcohol, odd to off balance. Not easy to drink in the slightest. Lively carbonation for what it is. Dry. Acrid, boring, light barrel. Quite "meh" for a barrel aged imperial stout and not easy to choke down on top of that.

Total Wine, Fairfax 375ml ($4.50): Pours black with brownish head. Corked bottle was a wicked gusher. Aroma is a copious amount of fresh coffee, with milk chocolate, wood, and a bit of booze. Taste is kind of sharp and peppery. Taste is lightly sweet. Some of vinous and woody notes become manifest deeper into the beer. Lots of chocolate. Sticky mouthfeel. Pretty good, but not as smooth as I like my imperial stouts.
