[500ml bottle from Tescos, Portsmouth, rated 22/8/2009 & several times subsequently] Pours a deep amber-red with a large and attractive cream head. Slight but prickly carbonation. Strong aroma of fruit (orange and stewed apple), caramel and sweet malt continues into the powerful yet smooth and relaxing flavour. There is the occassional tang of metallics from the pasteurisation, but it’s hidden better than in most pasteurised beers. I did worry for a while it was going to leave a too-sticky finish but no - a subtle earth-and-straw hop bitterness kicks in at just the right moment to save the day. A really, really good beer, which stops just short of true excellence because of the metals and fizz. Imagine how good this could be if they tried bottle-conditioning it...

Cask at the Lyndhurst, Reading on 3/3/2009 - the 5.6% version. Gold with a thin cream head; pineapple aroma; tropical fruit flavours and a light floury finish. Rather dull and ordinary for the ABV.

500ml bottle from supermarket. Rich amber colour, off white head. Sweet malt and hop taste. Good marks for this beer that’s getting harder and harder to find.
