Burton ale… a bit of an obsession at Butcher’s Tears. An extinct beer style somewhere between India pale ale and Barley wine, made with extensive use of dark brewing sugars for complex fruit and liqourice flavours, topped with generous amounts of hops. This is an original recipe from Truman’s of Burton-on-Trent (the place of origin) from exactly a hundred years ago, appropriately brewed on Armistice day of 2018. Earthy hop notes of orange and rose petals along with a touch of sulphur give way to fruit flavours of pear, pineapple and fig with hints of toffee, hazelnut and treacle before ending in a firm bitterness. Full bodied yet not sweet. A beer with extra everything without becoming too heavy.

Almost clear amber brown beer, good fluffy pale tan head. Airy palate, fairly dry, decent fine carbonation. A little dry malt cream with light caramel. Okay mellow dried fruits underneath. Finishes fluffy with a touch of bitterness. Old skool. Not bad.

Auburn with a frothy off-white head that lingers. Very earthy aroma. Dusty too. Prunes underneath. Taste is bittersweet to bitter with a rich, caramel undertone, a yeasty white bread sweetness, and then a big dollop of grassy/herbal bitterness and plain old earth on top. Finishes with a modest warmth. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. It’s challenging but I like this one. Good.

Bottle. Amber color. Oak, malt, soft floral notes and caramel in the aroma and flavor. Sweetish, fairly complex. Dusty. Raisin. Interesting.

Pours a deep ruby/copper colour. Big beige/reddish head with a layer of 2 mm retention and some lacing. Aroma's of grain/malt, yeast, moss (or the usual BT mossy yeast), fruity. Retronasal it's malty, bitter, fruity and mossy. Flavour is fairly bitter with light malty sweetness. Medium bodied and quite licely carbonation. Dry mouthfeel. Finish is earthy bitter.

0.33 l bottle from 'Sterk Avondverkoop', bottled in December 2018. A bit hazy, dark reddish amber with a medium large, foamy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish, gently herbal-grassy, slightly floral and a bit fruity aroma of caramel, tea leaves, cinnamon and some marmelade. Gently sweet, malty, slightly bitter, herbal-fruity, floral and a bit grassy taste of caramel, raisins, tea leaves, marmelade and a touch of cinnamon, followed by a short, moderately bitter, gently herbal-grassy, moderately dry and almost minerally finish. Medium to full body, smooth and quite effervescent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Very pleasant Ale, quite rich for that abv, just a bit over-carbonated. Lovely label by the way!

Tap at dB’s. Hazy amber with big light beige head. Caramel, lots of dried plums and pear with soft apricot. Grassy, and some bitter green leaves and old style pilsener hops, dry flowers. Medium sweet and a bit over medium bitter. Medium bodied. I like it.
