Explorer is light and refreshing, suffused with the aromas of a grapefruit grove. The citrus attack will burst on your palate as the hops deliver their fruity bitterness.

Available in 500ml bottle and in keg in selected Wetherpoon outlets.

Pale Ale malt is used to provide the biscuity backbone of this blonde beer but it’s the hops that give it its personality. We use two American hops, grown in the Yakima Valley in Washington. These hops, called Columbus and Chinook, add wonderful grapefruit flavours to the beer.

August Bank Holiday 2006, Sole Bay Inn, across the green from the brewery. Served in the new Adnams, tall pint glass (don’t like them). Paler than the normal bitter, but a lot darker than Regatta, a kind of light brown, with a rusty blonde thrown in. It looks good. Aroma of malt and fruits, but the table next to me have fish and chips delivered (good but expensive), so unable to assertain which fruits were coming to the fore! Good bitter taste and after taste, better than some 4.3% I could mention. Not heavy to the mouth, but there is body to it, I drank it in large gulps, I would have had another, but I was on a mission, so couldn’t. Reading a few of the other reviews, it would appear some were disappointed, that is a shame, because drinking it in Southwold is a joy. I just hope the unimpressed get another chance to try it, and it is more true to its normal self.

Sept 2006: First time I have had the bottled version. Different animal to the cask beer I drink when in Southwold. This blonde beer should be cooled before serving, which is unusual for a British beer. The New World hops Chinook and Columbus give the beer its name. Light and refreshing, it is, but the bottle says citrus and grapefruit aromas, not sure I got those, but overall, a fine beer for a hot sunny day.

Cask at the George, London. Clear yellow on the pou with a light, white film. Pleasant nose of citrus, grapefruit and straw. Nice flavor, with light toasty hay, grass and citrus bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Mild bitter finish, more citrus and grass on the tongue. Pretty good beer.
