Let us deconstruct this beer, shall we? To make it 100% grandpa-proof. So Italian coffee, because grandpa likes the strong stuff. Imperial because the old man likes to think he’s king. Milk is good for the bones. And Stout, well, not only is that the type of beer, but in Dutch stout also means ‘naughty’. Which is precisely how we like our grandpappies in Holland to be. Woohah!

Can split at the Columbus Christmas Bash (who knew this would be the last!), thanks to Danny Boyo, Level 6, 15/12/22. Light black with a tan cap that retains well. Nose is coffee grinds, roast malts, charr, dried fruit rinds. Taste comprises coffee bean, chocolate, roasted bite, toffee, spice. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent coffee affair.

Canned (with Mats). Black colour, small beige head. Aroma is coffee, some toffee, alcohol and mild roasted things with some raisins too. Flavour is coffee, mellow chocolaty toffeeish/fudgelike smoothness and some roast to it. Nice espressoish chocolty fudge finish.

Can shared in London - cheers to Dan. Pours mostly clear brown with a small, creamy off-white head. Medium sweet flavour with well toasted malts, semi-dark fruits, toffee. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, light coffee, sticky semi-dark malts. Tasty.

33cl can from Abeervinum, Rimini, Italy. Pours dark plum, almost black, with fine cappuccino foam, limited. Aroma intense of coffee and dark chocolate, some vanilla, nutty, fig. Body is surprisingly thin for a 10° beer, with a nice tickling carbonation. Taste is intensely sweet, with some evolving bitterness and a long final exhibiting a nice spiciness too. A great beer!

Can 330ml (Alko web)
Opaque brown colour, medium-sized brownish head. Not so suprisingly coffee dominates the aroma. Toasted malts, maybe hints of dark fruits and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied. Lactose sweet flavour, coffee, chocolate in the flavour. Also sweet Amaretto with some alcohol. Quite light for its ABV. Lactose coffee bombs are not my thing but decent strong milk stout.

0.33 l can from a trade with markoijelena (thanks Marko!), 'Italian Coffee Imperial Milk Stout', canned in October 2020. Pitch black with a medium large, quite dense, stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, gently roasty aroma of espresso, cocoa, light marzipan and traces of resiny hops. Rather sweet, malty, gently roasty taste of espresso, cocoa, amaretti and some marzipan, followed by a medium long, quite roasty, gently bitter finish. Medium to full body, smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite simple, nevertheless tasty and saturating.
