Coming on like a Tropical Tempest, this new version of our Distant Storm Double IPA delivers notes of Mango, Papaya, Passion Fruit, Guava and a healthy dose of citrus.

Enormous amounts of wheat & our farm grown pilsner malted barley, and massively mash hopped with our Cascade hops, whirlpooled with our Chinook – and dry hopped with both, this beer is a tropical juice extravaganza.

Draft pour enjoyed at Barnside, Ladner. Juicy golden orange haze, rocky head, plenty of lacing. Biting hazy double up front, with lots of tropical fruit and stinging hops. Juicy secondary, and finishes on a fruity note. Aggressive at first, but this ends up quite mellow for an imperial, with little booze on the palate at all. Flavorful and enjoyable.

Dull pale amber. Thin head. Doesn’t look so shit hot. Orangey sort of hop nose. Alcohol up front, some bitterness, the hops are restrained. The malts go nowhere and add nothing. So this beer just misses on some basic structural elements.

473 ml can. Pours a full copper colour with full head. Aromas of grassy pine, light orange, some perfume, and toasted malts. Malty flavours with a little fruit and a hint of pine. If there were hops they are pretty much gone.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Copper / liught amber colour, hazy. Some smell of caramel, brown sugar, light orange peel. Good body strength, lean mouthfeel; there's some caramel, not an excellent malt base, at least it's not strong; the bitterness is high, the hop quality are lacking, there is some harsh pine resin, some bitter orange peel; but thereis also a weird sourness, mild, but out of place. Not old school, not modern West Coast IPA; the result is not exciting.

Clear copper with a rich off white head. Pine, peel and caramel. Bitter and sweet with a long sticky finish. No balance.

On tap at Barnside, pours a cloudy orange amber with a small beige head. Aroma is very chaotic, with hop resins, perfume, citrus zest and dirty earthy notes. Flavour follows suit, with perfume, hop resins, muddy earthy notes, and pronounced citrus bitterness. There's some sweet caramel malt underneath also. Totally uncoordinated and quite chaotic. This needs a hell of a lot of work.

Re-rate: Accidentally included this in my flight so may as well re-rate it (lowering the score). Poured from the tap. Hazy gold with small white head. Super perfumey, orange peel, worse than last year... Feb 17, 2021 (6/3/6/3/12=3.0): Poured from the tap. Near clear copper with off white head. Caramel malt, mild pine hops and a hint of soap. Oddly sweet, slightly off.

Brownish copper and okay foam, okay sweet hops on the nose. Flavour is big hops, piney and tart, citrus notes. Crisp and good oiliness. A good DIPA.
