This dark reddish-brown ale has notes of marzipan and lightly roasted coffee. It’s the exceedingly drinkable “refectory” beer of the range and sets the tone for what’s to come. It was inspired by the old brown version of Westvleteren 6 Dann knew and loved back in the 1990s.

Sample thanks to Cloin: Poured a brown almost translucent with a tan ring head. Aroma is fruity, yeast esters, caramel malt. Taste is bubble gum, yeast esters, malty, very Belgian like but not from there.

Can at home, from HOTM online, 01/01/21. Hazed dark amber to light brown with a well presented beige head. Nose is ripe fruit esters, phenols, bubblegum, pear drop, nutty, light spice. Taste comprises Belgian yeast esters, caramel, stewed fruits, apple core, grains, fruit loaf, pinch of spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid flavoursome Belgian affair.

Nicely drinkable with bready malts, light herbal hops and a pleasant estery yeast profile

Can at home in Hackney - sourced from Premier Hop. Pours clear russet with a creamy tan head. Lightly sweet with nice brown bread notes, subtle earthy bitterness, restrained Belgian yeast, a nip of candi sugar, dried berries. Light bodied with delicate, massaging carbonation. Pretty clean on the finish, more light earthy bitterness, toasted malts, hints of brown sugar. Highly drinkable.

Can from The Beerhive. Hazy deep golden body with no head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of nuts, earth and chocolate. Flavour of caramel and fig. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. A classy beer from a classy brewery. Sweet and light.

Can, picked up at the brewery. Mostly clear, reddy copper colour. Thin, fairly dense, lasting, beige head. Nose has nutty grain. Candi sugar. Dried vine fruit. Some tobacco leaf. A slightly leathery character too. Taste is pretty sweet, with a touch of dryness, and a follow up, leafy bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel. Maybe a little on the thin side of things. Foamy carbonation. Moderate bitterness lingers on the finish. And in the time I typed that out, I’d sank it.
