In the first lockdown last year, we brewed an incredibly cool recipe together with LEHE Pruulikoda (EST) from a distance.
Because the real physical collab was thrown overboard by COVID at the time, we named the beer “Must Aare” (“Black Treasure” in Estonian), which went overboard but has not been lost.
Must Aare is a Big Black Barleywine, brewed with loads of "Maris Otter" and "Special B" malts that impart the "raisin" scent and flavor to barleywines. We also used containers of Carafa and Dark Crystal for the roasted toffee side.
Beautiful, almost black in color with a ruby red shine, Must Aare has a monstrous alcohol percentage of 16%.
After that we barrel aged this Black Treasure for a full year in Bordeaux barrels (red wine), which give a depth of ripe red fruit towards Port, with a nice layering of oak, soft tannins and a hint of vanilla.

Can via Meeki - many thanks! Hazy black, small, frothy, beige head. Aroma of prune, raisin, burnt brown sugar, toffee, tawny port, almond, wet wood, salmiak, liquorice. Taste has very sweet prune & raisin, sourish brambleberry note in a toffee-like, brown-sugary, almondy malt body with umami-salty (salmiak, olive) and slightly herbal notes. Herbal hoppy finish, more pronounced roasted maltiness (toast, burnt brown sugar somewhat), dried fruits and warming (port) wine-like alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Layered Barley Wine, but ironically not really in terms of the red wine treatment.

Black, thin layer of tan head. Plenty of red wine in the smell, some butter.. Good thickness, definitely a lot of alcohol heat. Taste is raisiny at first, some light licorice, and then the barrels kick in with loads of red wine and tannin. Bit unbalanced.

THT. Black with no head. Sweet deep roasted chocolate malts, dark and dried fruits. Full body, soft carb. Tasty stuff.

Clear dark brown to black beer, small creamy beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty, nice roast, lots and lots of chocolate, coffee, bit of vanilla. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: lots of alcohol, malty, soft roast, pretty bitter, coffee, chocolate, lots of alcohol, pretty bitter, sweet. Aftertaste: sweet and sugary, alcohol warming and even burning the back of the throat, little bitter, some campfire, decent, more alcohol, sweet, very nice, lovely beer!

Pitch black, no head. Thick, sweet, boozy, salty licorice but not quite salmiak, bourbon. Deceptively smooth for the abv, but at the same time quite bold and strong. #BiL even though not very barleywiney. Very nice.
