An old Belgian tradition--the artful blending of different beers to create unique, transcendent flavors--has a new home in the New World. An unlikely alliance of freshness and funk, this release combines Belgian kriek with a tart oud bruin aged for several years in oak barrels at Liefmans, our sister Blenderie in Belgium. Bright cherries, assertive sourness, oaky tannins and barnyard notes make for a deeply layered, richly complex, and truly distinctive experience.
It's Super Krieky.

Bottle. Brownish red with a small head. Aroma is sour and fruity. Taste is also sour and fruity. Not my favorite.

12 ounce bottle. Garnet colored pour. Creamy beige head is large, but settles to a manageable cap. Tart, funky sour fruit aroma. Sour and super. Dark cherry meets wild yeasties. Some woodiness. Hints of apple cider vinegar, fermented fruit and barnyard funk. A real sipper. Go get this.

330mL bottle, best before 5/18/24, drunk 6/30/22. Clear (looks sterile filtered), dark cherry with a large, well-retained, pinkish-white head. Smells ok. Spicy cherry, waxy crayon, black pepper. Pretty standard Liefmans. Not sure, after all these years, that I'm too enthused about Liefmans. I suspect if I revisited most of their beers, I'd be very underwhelmed. They seem to be doing some suspect things, though of course I know nothing about their brewing/barreling practices. Just don't get a very authentic or great character from their beers (doesnt help its sterile filtered, assumedly, and shipped to New York, then bottled there). Yep, in the mouth it's filtered AF, leading to thinning and oxidation. There's some syrupy sugar, and to its credit, some excellent cherry character. But the beer is far, far, far from ideal. From day one I've railed against highly filtered beers and this is no different. What a frickin' waste; these cherries were so good. This could have been great.

I assumed Super Kriek would have a super amount of cherry tone. Not really. It does have a pleasant cherry tone, but the carbonation is too bright, force carbonation or something...guess those natural flavors don't help. Drinkable certainly, but not an impressive offering. Like a streamlined version of Rodenbach Grand Cru.

Pours bright magenta into a tulip. Pink head with medium retention recedes to pool surface. Dark cherry and oak aromas. Sharp with tart cherry and citrus upfront turning to dry, earthy oak in the medium length finish.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear, bright, cherry red with a large creamy pink tinged head. Tart/earthy/cherry aroma. Med body. Flavor is moderately tart cooking cherry with some supporting earthiness. Funk, but not Brett for me. Earth/funk. Very dry. Tart. Very tasty.

Bottle: pours reddish gold with a white head. Aroma is cherry, slight funk, vinegar, wood. Taste is slightly sweet, cherry, sour. Sort of like a high quality soda. Good.
