Soft gusher. Nice bubbly-creamy mediumlasting head, hazy dark orangy color. Aroma is slightly dry funky floral, oak, old rope, minerals, sorrel, mild vinegar, flowers, co2 stinging in the nose, bark, grass, cellar, yeast, grape peel, bark. Taste is slightly dry sour-ish fruity, mild vinegar, sorrel, fruit stones, old rope, oak, flowers, unripe berries, citrus, fruit salt. Medium bitterness, slightly dry sour-ish fruity mouthfeel. Nice.

Backlog from 1 october 2021. Re-entered review because of a little problem caused by wrong Ratebeer merging. Bottle, no 62 15/04/2020. Color: Lightly hazy golden, white head. Aroma: Tart, oak wood, berries. Taste: Moderate to over moderate tart, berries, citrus notes, subtle wild yeast funk, light sweetness, old hop, oak wood, very subtle peat notes getting more recognizable at the long lasting finish. Dry to very dry mouthfeel. Color: Slightly hazy golden, thin white head. Aroma: Fruity, subtle funky. Taste: Fruity gooseberry, grape, citrus notes, hay, some rural funk, oak wood and subtle bit sweetish Oloroso notes. Moderate to over moderate tart, light to moderate sweetish. Medium body, below average carbonation. Very nice, I'm curious how the second bottle will age in the cellar.

Special edition of 3 Fonteinen geuze, created from lambics that were aged on various sherry barrels with – quote the brewery – ‘highly peated characteristics’, backblended with ‘normal’ lambic. Bottle under high pressure, but no gushing. Thick and frothy, egg-white, slowly breaking head over a hazy beige-hued peach blonde robe. Aroma indeed reminiscent of very dry sherry (and strongly so), toasted pine nuts, walnut skin, some dry peat indeed but nothing like the iodine-like effects you get from a peated whisky barrel aged beer, lots of old wood, dusty attic, wet leather, peach kernels, dried lemon zest, straw, old dried fenugreek leaf, very dry cider, unripe peach. Crisp, tart onset, dry and vividly carbonated (as befits any geuze of course); dried lemon peel, unripe nectarine and light gooseberry effects but somewhat less estery than I am used to from the style, with drying lemony lactic sourness round a bready core as well as something vaguely sweet-nutty (walnut comes the closest) clearly derived from the sherry. This nutty aspect, along with a dry, sour-grape-like fruitiness and drying woody tannins, eventually gets accompanied by indeed a touch of smoky peat (yet again: nothing like the peatiness of e.g. an Islay whisky barrel aged stout or something like that) and by odd but interesting herbaceous elements (fenugreek, tea leaf). The sherry, however generally dry, provides a gracious vinosity to the finish – a kind of juiciness almost, keeping everything colourful, supple and elegant. The highly coveted Zenne y Frontera series peeps around the corner here – quite a unique 3 Fonteinen product again, not the most accessible one perhaps, but no doubt immediately appealing to the true lambic head. I had a couple of recent ‘peaty’ lambics by new experimenters Angerik and Publitasting, but those made use of actual peated whisky barrels whereas here, the ‘peated’ moniker can be a bit misleading, as I did not have a real ‘peaty’ experience here and no peated whisky was involved in the first place; instead I got a brilliant 3 Fonteinen lambic soaked in dry sherry, with a kaleidoscopic shift in flavours that can entertain me for hours on end.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle with an April 14, 2020 bottling date. Aroma is nice with a balanced earthy, herbal funk and cherry fruit notes. Light grain notes and hints of oak. Light alcohol and sherry notes. Pours a fairly clear, dark golden-orange with a medium large, medium thick, white head that recedes steadily to a small film that lingers. Light lacing and small legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with medium light acidity that's a touch sharp. Light grain notes. Medium bitterness and light alcohol and sherry notes. Moderately fruity with nice cherry and stone fruit notes and hints of lemon. Hints of the peated smoke notes and faint oak. Light herbal, earthy must notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a solid geuze. Really nice fruity notes with balanced musty funk. The oak, sherry and peat notes add a nice complexity in the background. A bit acidic but not over the top. I wouldn't mind it having a bit more of the horse blanket funk as it's pretty fruity.

Snallygaster: yellowish. Light smoke, hefty funk. Deep complexity. Light burnt smoky aftertaste. Great.
