Firestone Walker Brewing Double Mind Haze

Double Mind Haze

Firestone Walker Brewing in Paso Robles, California, United States 🇺🇸

IPA - Imperial New England / Hazy Regular
Score
7.12
ABV: 8.3% IBU: 35 Ticks: 37
Our juiciest, fruitiest and haziest IPA ever. An explosion of tropical hop flavor at 8.3% ABV.

Original Mind Haze hops such as Azacca, Cashmere and Mosaic are now joined by Strata, Sabro, Idaho Gem, Idaho 7 and Motueka. DMH is audaciously dry hopped both during and after fermentation, and total hops per barrel of beer reach nearly five pounds in the making of DMH. Sabro has a unique coconut aroma, while Strata offers bold, pungent fruit. Some of these hops might stick out in a lighter hazy like Mind Haze, but in this stronger beer they find a perfect balancing point.

Humongous can. Pours a dirty dull amber with floaters. Aromas of sweet orange, muddled fruit, caramel and bready malts. Flavours follow same; quite malty with a little pine to finish

Poured from 568mL can (pkg 03/23/21). Cloudy gold with white head. Some mild tropical hops with mild stone fruit and malt. Too old, despite being new in the store (thanks B.C. import liquor distribution laws #sarcasm).

Opaque and pale. The oxidation on the hops is real - they want to be grapefruity but alas, they are le fromage. On the palate, there are hints of the brighter tropical hops they want to be, along with a sweet pale malt character. But it's pretty clear that there's a gap between what the brewery intended and what arrived in BC. What that gap is, who knows, but it hurt the beer.

On tap at Red Cow North Loop. Pours a hazy orange with a light gold hue and a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has sweet citrus and melon with some mango notes supporting. Flavor starts with mango and melon with a growing slightly bitter citrus note.

Taster at home courtesy of Sander. yellow murky color, small white head. smells earthy, grassy, bit dank, melon, tobacco, some oats. nice smell. full body, soft carbonation. tastes citric, grassy, dank, melon, mango, some pineapple, peppery, tobacco. finishes lightly bitter with notes of melon, pineapple and some mango. good one overall, but also rather heavy, lacks some drinkability. not a bad one, but also not my preferred style. good.

19.2 oz can from Albertsons. Goldenrod colored pour, white creamy head. Light aroma of citrus and hops. Flavor is also muted, grapefruit peel, some earthy hop notes. Nothing too exciting here.

On tap at Firestone Walker - Buellton, pours a cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma is gently dank, with grainy notes, low dank hops, and pulpy stone fruits. Flavour has good clarity, with lightly dank hops, melon, stone fruit, and biscuity malt. Low chalk/earthy nonsense for a hazy, with a vibrant hoppiness and juiciness on the finish. Excellent.

355ml can. Sweet, ripe fruity and citrusy with some grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine and floral notes. A bit too sweet and caramely malty, doesn't feel super fresh.

Straight from the can. This isn’t a good idea after soccer training, man than this tasted sweet with some pineapple, fruity but in this context way too sweet.
