21 August 2021. At Gents Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke, Kevin, Jerre & the Ghent beer crew! Hazy black, stable, foamy, beige head. Aroma of pink grapefruit, dried orange peel, pineapple, walnut, toast, coffee roast. Taste has sweetish orange & pineapple, bitter grapefruit & toasty maltiness, piney note. Earthy & piney hoppy finish, coffee roast, subtle citrus peel, toasted nuts. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Very 'black' character even for a BIPA.

Newish Verzet beer made for their fans (‘brigadiers’) and not distributed through shops or bars; a black IPA, sampled at Gents Bierfestival. Medium thick, frothy, mocha-beige head lacing in shreds over a jet black beer. Aroma of burnt walnuts, dried wormwood, dry old liquorice, wet leather, black peppercorns, coffee grounds, cloves, black tea. Dryish onset, some dried fig, medium carbonation, oily body; remaining low in sweetness with a toasty bitter maltiness of roasted walnuts and hard caramel with a dash of black coffee, ending with a long, spicy hop bitterness matching with the roasted bitterness, peppery and herbal with a touch of dried citrus peel. Uncompromising in its bitterness – as expected from this brewery – but lacking a bit in hop aroma to fully qualify as a black IPA; feels more like a hoppy stout, as some other raters already mentioned, but a good one at that.

Huge tan-cream head, stable, over dark brown beer. Roast, ashes and dry hops. Afterwards, bit of resins and cypress. Dry stout, faint restsugars, roast; bitter-ish, somewhat nutty, peanuts, and coffee. Well-bodied, slick. IMHO, more a hoppy (good) stout than a black IPA.
