Named after the giant orange stars in the sky, this barleywine ale has a gratifying effect and drinks smooth. Three malts create a hearty malt profile with robust character. Copious amounts of Columbus, Chinook, and Simcoe hops combine for a nice resin hop flavor. Orange Giant is perfect for aging in your cellar.

Amber, murky-looking. Medium head. The aroma is orangey, piney, a bit boozy. Definitely old school chewy. On the palate, it starts sweet, then into an orangey bitterness. Lots of crystal malt stuff. Burly barley wine.

Poured from 473mL can. Orangey brown with small off-white head. Quite malty, old school style American barley wine. Some citrusy notes, mild bittering hops, orange peel, decent.

500 ml bottle. Pours a clear mahogany with moderate head. Aromas of orange peel and bready malts. Flavors of orange peel, pine, candi sugar and caramel malts. A little rough - worthy of a cellar.

Deep amber and copper coloured body with a thick, four centimetre tall off-white head on top. Aroma of vanilla, oak, dry malts with a lot of cedar, woodsy scents along with some pitted fruits and a touch of a nutty quality towards the end. Medium to Almost-Full-Bodied; Strong nutty and earthy flavours dominate with a lot of dry grain, some vanilla, a touch of bourbon oaky quality with more of the caster sugar and caramel notes than anything else. Aftertaste shows some deeper and more robust grain and nutty finishes with a lot of sugar still, and a touch of tobacco and pungent bitterness at the very end. Overall, a nice and rich malt-based beer with a lot of sugars and a relatively easy-to-drink body with profile, especially given the time aged, which maybe should make this a bit more cleaner still - as some astringent, pungent and deep alcohol flavours are still noticeable on this one. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Seattle (WestLake), Washington [State] on 18-February-2016 for US$7,99 sampled at my house here in [the real] Washington after finishing the USMC Marathon on 28-October-2018 for the eighth time.

Bottle from Belmont Station. Orange us for the color, not any citrus. Deep irange golden, share bubbly head. Malty, boozy aroma. Taste is malts before being obliterated by the alcohol heat. Boozy and warm.

On tap at McKay's Taphouse, pours a clear amber with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out caramel malt, some resinous hops and sweet candied sugar. Flavour is extremely sweet, approaching cloying territory, with lots of candied sugar, cotton candy, caramel and light resinous hops. Very boozy on the finish, along with the cloying sweetness. This is everything I don't like about American barley wines - way too sweet and boozy.

22oz bomber pours with a clear deep copper body that supports a thin off white head. The aroma offers up clementine citrus and pineapple hard candy, some booze and then a bit of malty sweetness. The taste delivers citrusy and near tropical like hop notes that are bitter and a bit boozy. As this heads toward midway some bitter floral hoppiness starts to shine through as the malty sweetness ties this thing together. Pretty nice drinking hoppy barleywine.

2015 edition, bottle from Trader Joes. Pours a clear ruby orange color with a medium tan head. A big caramel, strawberry and light toffee nose. Soft mellow notes of berries, burnt caramel, toffee, a bit of banana peppery Belgian notes (yeast?), some light fruity hops. Quite smooth. Hmm. A unique beast this one, and very good.
